It is true that wine is not difficult beverage. Although some peoples says wine is too difficult, Most of theirs reason is just from unused to drink. If your reasons form varieties of wines, yes, I agree with you. But other reasons of you will be totally useless. Try it, and feel it. Remember the day you had drunk a soju for the first time in your life. And be honest for you. “Soju was pretty delicious at the time?”
Now, wine is the most important part of our food culture. And there are so many varieties of wines more than you know. Wine expert, Chun Eun Sue releases her wine travel essay for finding world famous wine region. Waiting the day that wine will be comfortable like a soju. “The Mediterranean”. It’s the perfect beautiful word for your dreaming holiday. You can imagine a romance of the word, ‘Mediterranean’, you can dream an unforgettable holiday enjoying to get a tan on the boat. Or you can also expect the ‘red-carpet’ city of celebrities, Cannes. The Mediterranean is another word for “gorgeous”.

However, we are going to more countryside. In fact, the Mediterranean is the wide wine region where we can travel following only vineyards from the east to the west. The huge vineyards, fresh climate from the Mediterranean and the beautiful sunshine, it has everything for wine so, we can find all kinds of wines here, red, white, rose, sparkling wine and sweet one as well. Of course, we can’t miss white wine. My reason to introduce white wine this time is so simply. It’s because of the small coastal village, ‘Cassis’.

I arrived at Nice before going to Cassis. Nice is the typical city which makes tourists expect much. Honestly, however, it was just the sightseeing city for me, nothing special. Worse than, Nice was the difficult challenging of traffic jam and parking. Driving 2 hours from Nice, I finally get in Cassis.Nice and Cassis are both in Provence of the Mediterranean. Isn’t the stereotype of Provence ‘floral’ ‘perfumed’ or ‘architecture’? Considering wine, it’s the oldest wine region in France where the first region the Romans started their viticulture.

Cassis is small region but it has the old viticulture history as well before the Middle Age, furthermore in 1936 it was designated as AOC(the French wine classification-Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée). Red and rose wine are also produced here but the main production is the white. Comparing other white wine regions in the Mediterranean, the advantage of Cassis is its beautiful sea. Not huge, small but so attractive country beach. The beach of Cassis has the warmth of the welcome to touch tourists and to feel them cozy, not as etrangers. I was standing at this beach so long times and couldn’t help having a glass of white wine.

There are not so many wine growers in small Cassis. I visited one of them who is the famous grower, “Clos Sainte Magdeleine”. They look like the landmark of Cassis as they are located in the cliff in the sea. When you look at the beach of Cassis from this winery, you can only feel ‘the cool freshness’.

They are the 4 th generation to grow grapes in 18ha vineyards. It’s the proper size winery for being family-owned moreover maintaining their philosophy, not being too much commercial. The philosophy of Clos Sainte Magdeleine is to dedicate to the production of great white wines in Cassis. 80% of their production is white wines and the grapes are various, Marsanne, Ugni Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and so on.

Now, all their stories make me curious about the taste. Talking about taste, the first was very fresh aroma. It was so similar with ‘the cool freshness’ of the sea. Not very heavy, light and fresh white wine with good acidity. Surely I can choose sea food with it. Besides I’d love to have Vietnamese cuisine especially with bean sprouts. And at the seaside? Super! We can’t not to drink red wine though? I asked. Our neighbor, Bandol has better red. Red from Bandol and White from Cassis. She recommended with a smile. Frank, so simple and clean.

When I travel the wine region, I always wonder which type of wine do they make. Then, I can get the answer when I taste their wine. It’s a similarity to their nature. Not too much, not too fancy, just fresh and clean white wine from Cassis has also the similarity to Cassis’s small beach. It is truly being natural in balance with the pure beauty of the Mediterranean.
