Cheeky imaginations of ‘Feign’ girl ‘내숭’없는 그녀의 ‘내숭’ 이야기, 한국화가 김현정

It’s totally different from the Korean traditional pieces as we saw. Moreover, a pretty woman takes a Korean traditional costume ‘Hanbok’ while she drinks STARBUCKS coffee, takes on head set, carries a luxurious brand bag. It’s pretty much wired scene. But, look at the behind on your mind. Don’t hide your mind. At the first glance, these pieces may seem funny, there are more than the stories. Here is a Korean painter, Kim Hyun Jung who captured publics & critics heart through her pieces ‘Feign’ series.

Frankly, her works are kind of a diary that reflects her emotions since debut, in which a sense of hopelessness and fear mingle with joy and pleasure. She attempts to capture these phenomena, using the term Feign as a metaphor. Maybe she paints her growth process. So, the word of Feign embodies her vivid trace of growth as an artist. The artist who will lead K-painting like the world famous K-pop. Recently, she was awarded ‘Chunggang Culture Prize’ at ‘the 8th the woman of the year. CultureM Magazine meets the Korean painter Kim Hyun Jung and talks about her art story and ‘Feign’ series.

흔히 보던 한국화와는 판이하게 다르다. 더욱이 가장 한국적인 아이템인 한복을 입은 여인이 유명 브랜드의 커피를 마시고, 헤드셋을 끼고, 명품 가방을 메는 등 전통적인 한국화와는 정반대의 역동적인 일상을 보내고 있다? 신윤복의 ‘미인도’ 속 그 여인이 2015년 대한민국에 태어났다면 바로 이렇게 ‘내숭’ 가득해 보이는 모습이 아니었을까. 2013년 첫 개인전 ‘내숭’ 시리즈로 대한민국 미술계에 신선한 이슈를 불러 일으킨 한국화가, 김현정.

그녀가 말하는 ‘내숭’은 우리가 알고 있는 사전적인 의미의 내숭에서 한 단계 더 발전 된 개념일 것이다. 작품 속에 등장하는 김현정 본인의 자화상처럼 한복을 입은 여인은 가장 현대적인 소재들과 함께 다양한 상황을 연출하고 있다. 이런 표현을 통해 ‘내숭’은 삶에 대한 막막함과 두려움, 환희와 즐거움과 같은 살면서 누구나 느끼는 다양한 감정들을 좀 더 촘촘하고 다채롭게 포착하고 고백하는 역할을 하기 때문이다.

아시아를 넘어 전 세계를 휩쓸고 있는 K-pop의 버금가는 K-painting을 이끌어갈 그녀. 최근 ‘2015 제8회 올해의 여성문화인상’에서 청강문화상을 수상하는 등 평단과 대중의 이목을 동시에 사로잡은 그녀. 작가 김현정의 치열한 성장과정과 그 ‘궤’를 함께 하는 2016년 ‘내숭’ 시리즈가 기다려지는 이유는 그녀의 일기장 속 솔직 발랄한 이야기들을 훔쳐보고 싶은 호기심은 때문은 아닐까. 컬쳐엠매거진이 한국화가 김현정을 만나 ‘내숭’으로 시작된 그녀의 다양한 작품 이야기를 들어보았다.
