Where in the world is my other half? Beijing Duck

Unfamiliarity is the fuse and driving force of a relationship. Unfamiliarity in a relationship means the followings: mystique of your partner, growing fantasy, bottomless curiosity, and pleasant tension that keeps you on your toes. The trap is this unfamiliarity can create such a bubble, which at the point of its burst, you fall directly into the relationship boredom. The sweet nature of the infatuation is usually followed by the cold reality: it never lasts.

I had fallen into the relationship boredom where the bubble had busted and every day night feels just like any other night. I had been here before with past relationships. In the beginning we had this cute little silent agreement that we wouldn’t eat the food that either one of us didn’t like. I don’t like chicken so much that I hadn’t had chicken until I was 20 years old and the dislike of poultry stretched to duck as well.

He didn’t like any meat that is ‘dumped’ in water basically such as Seolleongtang(boiled beef in beef broth) or Galbitang(boiled beef ribs in beef broth). To be honest our unusual pallet made every date night quite challenging, as we had to avoid most of popular restaurants and the fun and care to satisfy each other’s need with new unique places just couldn’t last long.

The day he broke our silent little cartel and declared “I want to eat duck today!”, I was rather excited by the idea that now I could have what he doesn’t like than be sad the infatuation had come to its inevitable end. Not to mention, I didn’t want to waste my time arguing about a restaurant. On the way to the restaurant, my head was busy compromising with myself thinking I would only have to eat a few slices then go home and eat whatever I want to eat. The restaurant he had taken me was a Chinese restaurant specialized in Beijing duck. I was quite surprised with how it was served.

Chicken and duck in my memory was the dry and tasteless meat but also my dislikes of poultry was from the unfortunate experience where I got sick with chicken when I was very young. The shinny and crispy looking Beijing duck watered my mouth against my usual dislikes of its kind. Then the first bite! Under the crispy and scrumptious skin, the juice from the meat smeared into my mouth. The green onion salad that was served with it helped balancing greasy duck meat and provoked the next bite. “Has duck been this delicious this whole time??” He simply smiled back at me enjoying the duck then said, “Yea, you are an idiot for not trying it all this time”

The happiness from the pleasant unfamiliar dish led my feelings towards him deeper. ‘Perhaps everything depends on how you put your mind to it. This lethargic feeling I had could be nothing more than me thinking too much. If I change the way I think, things can be as good as the beginning again’ I thought. Everything felt so symbolic. He also started to go to restaurants he normally wouldn’t go.

It seemed like we were sparking our feelings for each other again as he pleasantly agreed with me when I told him about my enlightenment from the Beijing duck night. However I am sad to say that didn’t last either. Other than the Beijing duck, other dishes he had convinced me to try were pretty bad, as well as all the ‘meat dumped in water’ kind of dish couldn’t satisfy him except for once. Our ambitious promise had died away and so did our relationship. There wasn’t surprising twist at the end either.

We get unexpected little surprises from unfamiliar things. However the chances of getting one is pretty low. I had learned that I shouldn’t dodge everything that is unfamiliar all the time; on the other hand I also had learned that not all unfamiliarity is romantic in relationship. Above everything I now know that I must enjoy the honeymoon period where everything is beautifully unfamiliar, but keep in mind that this doesn’t make up the whole dish of relationship. It is not easy to grasp the idea though. Where in the world is my other half, who could serve me something beyond the infatuation of unfamiliarity?
