A new home on a sandy land

After the Korean War, an unusual town had been forged with the North Korean refugees. People who couldn’t return to their hometown after the cease-fire ended up settling down along the shore of Cheongho Dong in Sokcho, which is right by the truce line. The town where most of refugees from Hamkyungdo province have settled in is now called ‘Abai town’.

They had built mud huts as their home on the sand beach between the ocean and a lake on which they had to place used coal briquettes in order to harden the land. To this day, you can find these houses sitting together wall-to-wall forming spider web like passages. People who shared the same dream of going back home someday had been living together in Sokcho with affection and feeling of solidarity that are stronger than any brotherhood.

A grandfather who hung a printed Google map instead of a family picture on which he had marked his home and his mother’s grave yard in North Korea because he didn’t have any pictures of his family, a grandmother who had lost her home and parents during bombings, people who instantly became orphans as they lost the grip of hands of their parents during evacuation…

Losing home means more than simply losing a specific space of a house. It affects people with wave of longings to see the long lost parents and siblings, sorrows of being a refugee and having to deal with unwanted life in unfamiliar land and the unforgivable devastation of it all. The reason I had decided to live in a town with these folks where I had no acquaintances is because I wanted to share a humble piece of my heart with them. The sense of consolation for the people who has been through the unimaginable time of our history. By a Korean artist Shin Mi Jung
