The old ladies in my paintings are grandmothers around us and are mothers of all of us. I paint them in Victorian accessories and dressed in queen’s outfit as to put them in good mood to smile and have good time thinking of the saying ‘Fine feathers make fine birds’.

지구에게 늘 똑같은 얼굴만 보여주지만 매일같이 윤곽을 바꿔가면서 은은한 빛을 내고, 서로 끌어당기는 힘을 유지하면서 공기를 부여잡아주는 그런 사람. 잠시 잊혀도 지지만 생각날 때 바라보면 늘 그곳에 있는, 달이 되고 싶다.

Moon world is to me a resting place, but also an isolated moment, which finally allows me a veritable concentration, away from the world. On the other hand, this is a thing I want to be, existing here and there on the earth with the steady orbit even when veiled by stronger sunlight.

앞으로 어떤 식의 결과물을 내놓을지는 내 스스로도 모르겠지만 더 나은 것, 더 좋은 것을 해낼 수 있다는 자신감에 목이 마르고 이 무한한 갈증을 해소하기 위해 무한한 노력을 하고 다작을 해야한다는 것에 대한 생각에는 변함이 없다.

I am still not sure what kind of work I can put out in the future, however my thoughts on trying to create something better and nicer and as many paintings as possible in order to quench the artistic thirst hasn’t changed.

The half built concrete bridge is the very first bridge that had a paved road in Korean history. It may sound like the bridge has some sort of honorable significance, however Japan had built this tragic bridge in order to transport the rice that were exploited from the farmers in Iksan to Kimje during the colonization period.

바쁘게 교차하는 발걸음을 바라보는 사람, 핸드폰 위 손가락을 따라 이미지를 넘겨가는 사람, 길을 잃게 만드는 이정표를 따라가는 사람. 길거리에 지나가는 사람들은 대화가 없다. 현란한 색의 아지랑이에 초점을 잃었던 눈이 또 다른 눈동자를 만나 바라볼 것을 찾는다.

People looking down their busy walking footsteps, people handling images which slide according to their finger movement on the phone screen, people following indications which make them to get lost.

Haven’t I ever said ‘No’ the word I truly want to say sometimes. I became more confident with what I want to say since then. When someone asks me why I did something this way, I wish I could be true to myself and say “Because I wanted to” simply.

However once her memory is boxed in the frame of ‘Nationalism’, the human side disappears then the Nation, as a big matter will suck everything in. Perhaps that is why we as people who has been colonized with painful memory simply regard her memory as the memory of ruler or exploiter.
