Lucky for us, Earl Sweatshirt is rap’s hottest property of 2013. On the Doris LP, Earl’s first proper album, the young man experiments with an apathetic yet devious style, the abrupt masses of intimation, the metaphors and lyrical dexterity are a joy to envisage even if they seem to be accumulated in an inconsistent chain of command. Noticeably, and rather refreshing, are the individual deficiencies on offer. There are rare times when the extremely guarded Earl lets some vigorous sentiment dilute his calculated ramblings. Undoubtedly, it is a record that works due mainly to its methodological accomplishments and its radiated arguments. A sizeable feat when so many rappers lack expertise in either of these fields.
Earl ensures that this is a rap album that is steeped in procedural intelligence. Lyrically comparable to Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City, the artistic expertise here oozes so much innovative variation. While there may not be a stand out single anthem here, Earl ensures everything is expressed in an outward, fully blown, unrepentant style. Producing so much of the album himself, Sweatshirt is far from inconsiderate, offering ample mic time to his close acquaintances, using them to compliment his stylish approach. For example, Vince Staples on “Hive,” compliments Earl brilliantly, making this one of 2013’s best tracks. Obviously, when Tyler The Creator appears, all hell breaks loose, but in the most stylish of manners.
Shady and courting condemnation, Doris nods to Earl’s legacy as a somewhat rehabilitated rebel. It’s nonchalant, eloquent, and cavernous; all of this stemming from the mind of a 19 year old man. Sinister, profound, and deeply reticent, all these elements contribute to make Doris the best album of 2013; this is of course one writer’s opinion, so please share your thoughts. http://www.earlsweatshirt.com/
