Three years ago, Derwin Panda aka Gold Panda, burts onto the mainstream scene. In 1980, Derwin was born in Peckham, London, and was raised and educated in the affluent area Essex. A culture individual, Panda has lived in Japan and he previously studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies before pursuing further education at the University of London. Before hitting it big time, Gold Panda released several small records in 2009, but a year later the enigmatic wizard signed with Ghostly Internationa. 2010 was the year that Panda would unleash his first full length debut albumto release his debut album, paradoxically or not named Lucky Shiner
His linguistic style integrates methods from a gamut of electonica inspired equipment. The exemplary artist never fails to merge a balanced beat, methodically procured samples, resonance effects and electronic beats. Experimenting in clockwork, overlayed electronica that oozes ambience, Panda always manages to integrate a carousel like organ melody into so many of his quality tracks. Experimenting with both polyrhythm and electronic Cantonese mantra, Panda can create playful yet insightful music. Taking his profession rather seriously, he looks to the future, introducing a mechanized, almost robotic annihilation of a vague accent and a burlesque type digital beat. As always, Panda ensure that the disposition of these studio pieces are often radiant and fun-loving. Deviations proliferate, from the rustic ode from a simple acoustic guitar to the electric rhythms that shiver up the spine, Panda emerges himself in a sea of diversity.
Integrating samples into spiralling beats, Panda creates a melodic concoction somewhere between serenity and psychedelia. The London-based spinner began to create a subversive murmur in the almost a decade ago. An introverted sort with the a name like Derwin, he sunds more like a physicist than a world class DJ. However, Derwin or not, Gold Panda’s success began back in the electronic experimental age of the early 00’s, where he hacked up pop songs and experimented with them on his harmony producing sampler.
In his early twenties, Panda was remixing tracks for the super cool Bloc Party and the far lesser revered Little Boots, His ability to entice huge artists’ with his innovative hip-hop and trance-laden compositions have made him a force to be reckoned with, both in the UK and all across Europe. All this experimentation and soul searching eventually encouraged him to create an intercontinental melodic perception, a musical conception for his 2013 sophomore outing, an excursion which will see him visit Korea on the 7th of December. The show starts at 9pm in Prism, tickets priced at advance 38,000won, door 45,000won. Believe you me, this is a bargain and an artist worth seeing, truly inspirational. http://supercolorsuper.com/
