A journey to explore my inner loser “Inside Llewyn Davis” 영화, 인사이드 르윈

It released at the end of January this year, “Inside Llewyn Davis” directed by the Coen brothers take the largest share in the country’s diversity film part, and it is causing a wave. This film got both commercial and critic success in Korea. “Inside Llewyn Davis” is a road movie that ’60s folk musician Llewin leaves for Chicago to search a change in his unsolved life as a singer. Llewyn’s life is miserable. He has to wander friends flats to stay one night. What is holding Llewin’s nasty life? Whether self-esteem as an artist? Either he doesn’t have any other choice except the music? Neither proud a singer nor any other. Llewin try to work as seaman because he thinks he doesn’t have a hope of succeeding as folk singer. But accidentally or not, in the end, he will come back to the stage for singing.

A film about the self and identity
“Inside Llewyn Davis” is a film susceptible to various interpretations. The audience could enjoy reading forestalls, symbols and metaphors in this film. At first the structure of this film is circular structure. The film begins by the scene that Llewyn is beaten by someone in a back street alley with Llewyn’s performance at the Gaslight in New York. And in the last part of film, he sings on stage at the Gaslight in New York after his journey to Chicago. He is beaten one more time by someone in the same place.
Such like this film’s story building is circulating structure. This interpretation may enhance through the cat called ‘Ulysses’ having an important symbolic meaning in this film. This cat belongs to the Gorfeins who are willing to allow Llewyn to sleep in their apartment. That cat joins his journey and finally itself comes back to the Gorfeins. The cat’s name has many meanings. Ulysses is the same one in the Greek myth. It means that Llewyn will eventually return back to his life on the stage.

The loser in the face of my face
The title of the film “Inside Llewyn Davis” said Llewyn’s album name too, but at the same time as the movie contents is looking into Llewyn’s inner side. Llewyn’s clumsy relationship with others and his large and small bad luck, if not poor artists, ordinary people always experience it. In the live cafe filled with smoke and dense like illumination light and lyrical folk music and watching obscure folk singer’s life, the audience could watch loser’s face inside each one, even if the color is different?

 

올해 1월 말에 개봉한 코엔 형제의 영화 “인사이드 르윈”은 국내 다양성 영화부분에서 극장 점유율 1위를 차지하며 조용한 파장을 일으키고 있다. 아마도 이 작품은 코엔 형제의 작품 중에서 국내 영화 비평가와 대중들에게 동시에 좋은 작품으로 기억될 전망이다. “인사이드 르윈”은 60년대 뉴욕의 포크 뮤지션인 르윈이 풀리지 않는 가수로서의 삶에 변화를 찾고자 시카고로 떠나는 여정을 담고 있다. 하룻밤 보낼 소파 한 켠을 지인들에게 구걸해야 할 정도로 팍팍하고 구질구질한 무명가수 르윈의 삶을 지탱해주는 음악은 과연 무엇일까.
예술가로서 양보할 수 없는 자존심인지, 단순한 밥벌이로의 직업인지 모를 애매모호하기만 하다. 작품 속 르윈은 가수로서의 자부심도 없고, 다른 무엇이 없기 때문에 음악을 하는 것 같지도 않은 겉도는 인물로 묘사된다. 결국 그는 포크가수로서 생계가 어려워지고 희망이 없다는 생각에 돈을 벌기 위해 배를 타려고도 하지만 자의 반, 타의 반, 다시 무대로 돌아가게 된다.

자아와 정체성에 관한 영화
“인사이드 르윈”은 보는 이에 따라 폭넓은 해석이 가능한 작품이다. 영화 안에 깔린 다양한 복선과 상징, 은유에 초점을 두면 보는 재미를 더 할 수 있는데, 우선 순환적인 이 영화의 구조를 꼽을 수 있다. 르윈이 ‘가스등’이라는 뉴욕의 라이브 카페에서 공연장면과 함께 카페 뒷길 골목에서 누군가에게 얻어맞는 씬으로 시작된다. 그리고 영화의 마지막 부분에서 몇 일간의 시카고로의 여정이 끝나고 다시 무대에 선 그가 노래하는 모습이 보이고, 카페 옆 같은 장소로 불려가 얻어 맞는다. 이렇게 이 작품은 처음과 끝이 연결고리로 이어진 순환적 구조로 구성되어 있다.
영화 속 중요한 상징적 의미를 품고 있는 율리시스란 고양이를 통해서도 그 해석을 더 할 수 있다. 르윈에게 기꺼이 집을 내주면서 잠자리를 제공해준 골파인 박사 부부의 고양이는 우연히 그의 여정에 합류하고, 다시 골파인 박사 부부의 집으로 돌아간다. 긴 여정 끝에 귀향하는 신화 속 인물인 율리스처럼 고양이를 통해 전체적인 작품을 관조하는 감독의 주제의식이 내재되어 있는 것이다. 결국 돌고 돌아 다시 자신의 삶인 무대로 복귀하는 르윈의 성장 과정과 같은 맥락으로 이해할 수 있다.

 마주하게 되는 내 안의 루저의 얼굴
“인사이드 르윈”은 영화 속 르윈의 앨범 타이틀이자 그의 내면을 들여다 볼 수 있는 오브제 역할을 한다. 결국 타인과의 관계에 어설픈 르윈의 모습은 어떻게 전개될지 모르는 삶 속에서 허우적거리는 보통 사람들의 모습을 대변하고 있는 것일지도 모른다. 희뿌연 담배 연기와 섞인 조명 빛 아래 앉아있는 무명 포크송 가수의 고달픈 삶이야말로 감출 수 없는 기억의 잔향으로 남아 오래도록 우리들의 근처를 맴돌고 있을 것이다.
