Bear skin of Ganghwado is pictureque 강화도의 속살은 아름답다

Ganghwado is an island in the estuary of the Han River, on the west coast of South Korea. Ganghwado is separated from Gimpo, on the mainland, by a narrow channel, which is spanned by two bridges. Historically, it is significant as being the location of separate punitive incursions by the French in 1866, the United States in 1871, and the Japanese in 1875 when Korea was emerging from isolation.

As a sacred ground of the foundation of the country, it is the home of ideology of “Hongik Ingan” (Devotion for public welfare) of Dangun, the founding father of the first Korean kingdom. Ganghwado has preserved many cultural relics as scattered around the island and developed the island for the multipurpose of historical education and beautification of environmental surroundings for sight-seeing visitors.

대한민국의 굴곡진 역사를 온 몸으로 기억하고 있는 섬, 강화도. 삼국시대부터 시작해서 고려시대, 조선시대, 식민지시대 그리고 광복 후 6.25 전쟁의 피비린내 나는 역사가 어려있는 곳. 하지만 흘러가는 시간이 기억의 냄새를 조금씩 씻어가 듯, 강화도는 대한민국의 그 어떤 섬 보다 평화로운 섬이다. 또한 강화도는 세계문화유산으로 지정된 고인돌 유적지와, 단군왕검이 세 아들을 시켜 쌓았다는 삼랑성과 참성단, 한국에서 가장 오래된 한옥성당인 성공회 강화성당 등 다양한 문화유적과 명소를 품고 있다. 컬쳐엠매거진의 컨트리뷰터인 이상윤 사진작가가 대한민국의 명소, 강화도의 속살을 사진에 담아 보내왔다.
