By definition, a ‘portrait’ is ‘an artistic representation of a person, usually in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality and, as far as possible, to record something of the personal essence of the subject being portrayed’.

Since moving to Seoul in March of 2013, I have sought to capture some of the inspiring and wonderful people I have met thus far. Having completed The Natural Beauty Project Seoul, I continue to experiment with portrait photography in a very open way, not seeking formally posed images but rather trying to identify a less well known aspect of each personality.

Self portraiture has a long lineage. Cave paintings, which are the earliest know form of self portraits, in some cases date back more than 40,000 years. These images marked the artists’ presence in the world. For me, self portraiture is an intimate form of self expression, one which lends itself to the ever changing states of consciousness. I feel it is an art form that has an infinite range of possibilities which allows the artist to express his/her desires and to document his/her existence, just as the prehistoric artists did. 아일랜드 출신의 작가, 이퍼 케이시는 활동 초기부터 초상화 작품을 통해 인간의 내재된 욕망에관련된 다양한 메시지를 전달해 왔다. 특히 지난해 10월 서울에서 열린 ‘The Natural Beauty Project Seoul 2013’ 전시회에서 성형 수술을 하지 않은 50명의 한국 여성의 얼굴을 담아낸 사진을 통해 한국 사회의 어긋난 한 단면을 조명하며 ‘진정한 아름다움이란 무엇인가’에 대한 질문을 제시하였다.

이미 4만년 전, 인간의 최초 회화적 예술 활동이 본인들의 모습을 표현한 초상화였을 만큼 초상화와 자상화는 설치, 조각, 회화, 사진 등 다양한 분야에서 무수히 많은 메시지를 담아내고 있다. 마찬가지로 작가 이퍼 케이시는 자아를 표현하기 위해 글이나 말 보다는 자신에게 가장 친숙하며 무한한 감정을 이끌어 낼 수 있는 초상화로 작가적 상상력을 배가하고 있다. 인간의 내재된 욕망이 세상과 조우할 때, 또한 일그러진 욕망의 실체를 그리고자 그녀는 매번 새로운 분야에서 다양한 모습으로 본인 혹은 타인의 초상를 담아내고 있다.

아일랜드 출신의 작가 이퍼 케이시는 10년 이상을 퍼포먼스, 조각, 설치, 사진 등의 작업을 통해 인간의 신체적 혹은 존재의 문제를 다루어 왔다. 2013년 부터 서울에 거주하며 한국 사회 속에 동화된 한 인간으로서 느끼는 경험을 작가적인 시각으로 풀어내고 있다.
