Art House ‘Film Forum’ in Sinchon, Seoul 소수를 위한 복합문화공간, ‘필름포럼’

In the film industry ecosystem, the art film and the independent film are not competitive in the popularity and marketing as compared with the commercial film. If the commercial film monopolizes the market, there is only the commercial film on the market. How will be going? The result is predictable. The almost movie will be fall as a commercial product, it changes just industrial products. Finally, it will lose the identity as an artistic culture product. So in that sense the pursuit of diversity is important in the film industry and Art House may serves as a rare animal sanctuary.

There are some Art Houses in Seoul. Art Houses are the movie theaters designated by Korean Film Council that show primarily the art movie. Among them, Film Forum in Sinchon is unique in its origin and its nature. Film Forum was other kind of Art House that have screened rare masterpiece just for some cinephiles. From May 2012 the management of the theater has changed. And Art House newly was opened aiming for more complex cultural space and screening open art-oriented films. Located near the back door of Ewha Womans University, a small theater FilmForum has two cinemas each has 90 seats and 52 seats in the basement. Recently ’Inside Lewyn Davis’, ‘The Great Passage’, ‘Renoir’ were screened in the theater, and now ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, ‘The Empire of Shame’ and ‘Waste Land’ are showing.

According to the programmer of FilmForum, Sin YunJeong, FilmForum aim for showing in principle the artistic film who touch the sensibilities of the audience but avoid the too provocative films. And she said an episode, “One year ago a couple came from the other province to FilmForum to see a movie that was shown only in FilmForum.” Looking at the audience like that couple, she feels proud of FilmForum as Art House.

A small pretty café space is situated in Film Forum. This cafe is run by a Christian organization adapting to help the disabled person as part of their operations and engage the disabled person as a step. FilmForum organizes regularly exhibitions and performances, and film forums. Especially they promote the artists to use the space at a low price or for free in order to meet the public.  FilmForum aim as well communicating with the public as a multi-cultural space.

Small but at the same time stubborn, FilmForum would play the unique role as an art house on the art film ecosystem map. In order to maintain the ecological balance, it is necessary that the coexistence of the diverse species. In that sense, Art House is significant that the art film in that sense the film kind of cultural industry to maintain ecosystem for film culture system. And, we have to know that Art House is a at least recourse for coexist various quality of films in film industry.

어떤 생태계라도 강자와 약자의 역할은 언제나 구분되어 있다. 영화산업도 마찬가지다. 하지만 우리가 알고 있는 현실은 잘 짜인 경제논리처럼 돌아가지 않는다. 결국 상업영화가 예술영화와 독립영화의 자리마저 독식해버리면 영화는 예술적 문화생산품이라는 정체성을 상실하는 것은 불 보듯 뻔한 일이다. 때문에 다른 산업과 마찬가지로 다양성의 공존은 영화산업에서도 반드시 필요하며, 그런 다양성을 지켜내고 있는 소수의 예술영화전용관을 주목해야만 한다.

현재 서울에는 예술영화와 독립영화만을 전문으로 상영하는 몇 개의 예술영화전용관이 있다. 예술영화전용관이란 영화진흥위원회가 지정한 예술영화를 주로 상영하는 극장을 말하며, 신촌에 위치한 필름포럼은 그 태생과 성격이 좀더 독특하다. 필름포럼은 ‘시네필’만을 위한 걸작 위주의 작품을 상영하는 예술영화전용관이였는데, 2012년 5월부터 경영진이 바뀌며 복합문화공간의 성격을 더한 예술영화전용관으로 거듭났다. 이화여자대학교 후문근처에 위치한 아담한 규모의 필름포럼은 지하에 90석, 52석, 총 두개의 상영관을 보유하고 있다. 올해 들어 ‘인사이드 르윈’, ‘행복한 사전’, ‘르느와르’ 등이 상영되었고, 최근에는 ‘달라스바이어스클럽’, ‘탐욕의 제국’ 그리고 ‘웨이스트랜드’ 등을 상영하고 있다.

필름포럼의 극장 프로그래머인 신윤정씨는 영화프로그래밍에 있어서, 예술적 완성도가 높고 관객의 감성을 건드리는 예술영화를 우선으로 하지만 너무 자극적인 작품은 지양하는 것이 필름포럼의 특징이라고 한다. 그녀는 필름포럼에서만 상영하는 영화를 보기 위해 지방에서 올라온 부부의 에피소드를 전해주며 거리를 마다하지 않고 극장을 방문하는 관객들을 보면서 예술영화상영 전용관으로서의 자부심을 느낀다고 한다.

또한 필름포럼극장에는 소규모의 카페가 자리잡고 있다. 한 기독교 단체가 장애우들을 위한 프로그램의 일환으로 운영하고 있는 이 카페는 장애우들을 직원으로 고용하며 그들의 사회 활동을 적극적으로 지원하고 있다. 그리고 필름포럼에서는 전시 및 공연, 시네토크 등이 정기적으로 열리고 있는데, 주머니 사정이 넉넉하지 못한 예술가들에게 무료 또는 저렴한 가격으로 공간을 대여해주는 등 대중과 자유롭게 소통하는 복합문화공간으로서의 역할을 함께 수행하고 있다. 대중을 향해 모든 것을 공개한 작지만 고집스러운 극장, 필름포럼. 영화산업 안에서 필름 포럼 같은 예술영화전용관은 분명 필요한 존재임에 틀림없다.  때문에 보다 다양한 가치의 공존을 위한 최소한의 장치인 예술영화전용관의 중요성은 매번 강조해도 지나치지 않는 것이다.
