The place where Korean’s soul remains, ‘Dudeul village’ 두들마을에는 한국이 있다

Dudeul village is located at Yeongyang County where is an inland country in the north-eastern area of North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. An isolated area difficult to access, Yeongyang is sometimes called an “inland island”. The area is also known as a center of literature, with the tradition of scholars reading and reciting poetry. And Dudeul village is very famous for the Eumsik dimibang.

The Eumsik dimibang is a Korean cookbook written around 1670 by Lady Jang from Andong Clan, Gyeongsang Province. The author was in the noble yangban class and the book is a manuscript written in Korean. Eumsik dimibang encompasses Korean cuisine in general and deals with various ways of storing foods. The book also has 51 different entries related to traditional alcohoilc beverages. Since the book is the oldest and detailed cookbook written by a woman in Korean history, it is considered a valuable document for researching Korean cuisine.

두들마을은 경상북도 영양군에 위치한 작고 아담한 마을이다. 1640년에 당대 학자로 유명했던 이시명 선생이 정착하며 마을의 역사가 시작되었다. 현재 두들마을에는 역사적으로 중요한 고택들이 많이 남아있는데 1640년에 이시명이 정착하면서 세운 석계 고택은 경상북도 민속자료 제91호로 지정되어있다. 또한 항일시인 이병각의 집이기도 한 유우당은 경상북도 민속자료 285호로, 경상북도 문화재 자료 80호로 지정된 남악정 등이 있다. 또한 두들마을이 역사적으로 회자되는 이유는 이시명 선생의 부인인 정부인 장씨가 최초의 한글요리책인 ‘음식디미방’를 집필한 곳이기 때문이다.

‘음식디미방’은 1670년경 두들마을의 입향조인 이시명 선생의 정부인 안동 장씨가 한글로 집필한 최초의 조리서이자 여성이 집필한 동아시아 최초의 조리서이다. ‘좋은 음식맛을 내는 방문’이란 뜻의 ‘음식미디방’이 학술적으로 중요하게 평가 받는 이유는 한글로 쓰여진 최초의 음식조리서이자 당시의 음식 조리 과정을 굉장히 자세하게 묘사하고 있기 때문이다. 예로부터 전해온 경상도 양반가의 음식 조리법과, 저장, 발효 식품 등 146가지의 음식 조리법을 자세하게 기록하고 있다.
