Human depression absorbed by ‘Melancholia’ 인류의 우울을 삼키다

A famous Danish film director, Lars Von Trier talks about the end of the world by superimposing on depression. The film is composed of two chapters. In the movie, the story of humanity is limited through the narrative of two sisters, Justine(Kirsten Dunst) and Claire(Charlotte Gainsbourg) who has the different nature.
Justine is depressed. She is oppressed heavily with depression. She spoiled her wedding to be happy by the despair she cannot rid. In contrast to Justine, her sister Claire has the stable nature. Claire leads stable life with her rich husband and lovely son. But more the planet Melancholia approach the earth at full speed, more she is getting nervous.

Depression andApocalypse
‘Melancholia’’s opening scene begins with prelude of Wagner’s opera “Tristan und Isolde”. The instruction of ‘Melancholia’ expects the ending of the narrative. The scenes filmed in super slow motion make feel like too slow and heavy not to bear, as if we don’t want miss each moment. We feel from the music the Nostalgia toward the moment never to come back. And it shows visually overwhelming aesthetic value. Dead birds falling like leaves, Garden in shape of the watch without clock hands, landscape with three moons are reminiscent of the works of surrealist painter Magritte.
Anxiety about the end of the world seems like being lurking like a net in the unconscious of humanity’s unconscious. In the movie ‘Melancholia’, if I see the human’s anxiety for apocalyse through the Surrealist images, is it absurd? Because that the Surrealist art talk about the unconscious. Oh, in the film’s opening scene, collision of the Earth and the planet Melancholia is dazzling splendor until it cannot. The Earth is absorbed with a huge shock in to the planet Melancholia.

The two faces oflife_Justine, Claire
As mentioned earlier, the film is composed with two chapters after the magnificent opening. The narrative revolves around “Justine” and “Claire”, the name of two sisters. Justin is depressed. Las von Trier describes through John Everett Millais’s painting ‘Ophelia’ who is beautiful, so pure and so she is sadder.
While Justine finds tranquility perceiving the end of the world, her sister Claire is getting losing her calm. Because Claire would lose too many things to accept the extinction of the world. ‘Disappearing anxiety’ and ‘growing anxiety’ by the feeling of Apocalypse disappear charred when the planet Melancholia baby collide with Earth. And nothing.

덴마크 영화의 거장 라스 폰 트리에의 2011년작 ‘멜랑콜리아’는 우울증에 포개어 세계의 종말에 대해 말한다. 영화는 두 개의 부분으로 구성되었는데, 지구의 종말을 맞이하는 인류의 이야기를 성격이 판이하게 다른 두 자매 저스틴(커스트 던스트)과 클레어(샤를로트 갱스브르)의 내러티브로 한정한다.
영화는 고질적인 저스틴의 우울증과 함께 시작된다. 우울증은 저스틴의 존재 자체를 무겁게 짓누르고 결국 그녀는 벗어날 수 없는 절망감에 시달려 결혼식을 망치고, 파경으로 맞는다. 저스틴과는 달리 안정된 성격인 언니 클레어는 부유한 남편과 사랑하는 아들을 두고 평안한 삶을 영위하는데, ‘멜랑콜리아’ 행성이 전 속력으로 지구로 근접한다는 사실로 인해 그녀는 점점 불안해한다

우울과 세상의 멸망
멜랑콜리아’의 오프닝 장면은 바그너의 오페라 ‘트리스탄과 이졸데’의 전주곡으로 시작된다. 오프닝은 영화의 결말을 예상하면서 시작된다. 초저속으로 촬영된 영상은 매 순간을 놓치고 싶지 않은 듯이 견디기 힘들 정도로 느리고 무겁지만 다시 못 올 순간에 대한 아련한 ‘노스텔지아’마저 느껴지는 음악과 압도적인 조형미를 보여준다.

낙엽처럼 떨어지는 죽은 새들, 시계 바늘 없는 시계형태의 정원, 세 개의 달이 있는 풍경 속 인물들은 초현실주의 화가 마그리트의 작품을 연상케 한다. 세계의 종말에 대한 불안감은 인류의 무의식에 그물망처럼 늘 도사리고 있는 것 같다. ‘멜랑콜리아’에서 인류의 멸망에 대한 불안을 인간의 무의식을 예술의 화두로 여긴 초현실주의의 이미지를 통해 보았다며 과장일까? 영화의 오프닝 장면에서 ‘멜랑콜리아’ 행성과 지구의 충돌은 눈부시다 못해 찬란하기 까지 하다. 지구는 거대한 ‘멜랑콜리아’ 행성에 커다란 충돌 이후, 흡수되어 버린다.

삶의 두 얼굴 – 저스틴 & 클레어
앞에서도 언급했듯이 영화는 웅장한 오프닝과 함께 두 개의 부분으로 구성된다. 전반적인 흐름은 ‘저스틴’과 ‘클레어’, 두 자매의 이름으로 나누어진다. 저스틴은 자신의 결혼식을 망칠 만큼 절망적인 우울증에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 감독은 그녀를 순수하고 아름답지만 그래서 더 슬픈 화가, 존 에버릿 밀레이(John Everett Millais)가 그린 오필리어(Ophelia)의 이미지로 표현했다.

자신을 옭아매는 물풀과도 같은 우울증으로 꼼짝 못하던 저스틴은 지구의 종말을 감지하면서 점점 평온을 되찾는데 반해, 저스틴의 언니 클레어는 ‘멜랑콜리아’ 행성의 지구 접근과 충돌에 대한 불안감으로 점점 중심을 잃어간다. 세상의 소멸을 받아들이기엔 그녀는 잃을 것이 너무 많은 것이다. 세상의 종말에 대한 예감으로 ‘사라지는 불안감’과 ‘커져가는 불안감’은 행성 멜랑콜리아가 지구와 충돌하면서 까맣게 사라지는 것이다. 그리고 아무것도 없다.
