Sung Suk Je’s novel, ‘The invisible man’ 성석제 장편소설, ‘투명인간’

This novel’s main character is ‘Man-Su’. There are many different feelings in the name that get tangled up like a web. From his birth for him to be the invisible man, you can feel sympathy for him and will finish this book with deep sigh and lingering as a reader.

This novel depicts developing South Korea from the 60’s to the 90’s and unfolds by not Man-Su but other characters, his family, friends and so on.

Man-Su was fourth of six. He was neither good-looking nor clever, but kind, considerate and honest. Reading the story of his childhood, you can feel gradually his weight and pain of life in the future.

It was so difficult to enter the famous universities in Seoul 70s. While Man-su’s big brother could do, he suffered from poverty in Seoul and volunteered for military service to Vietnam to make money. However, he finally returned his home dead. Man-Su’s family was in deep sorrow. On this chapter, Man-Su’s grandfather grieved and blamed the violent democracy of South Korea. As big brother died, Man-Su had in all spotlight by his family.

Man-Su made sacrifice to siblings. In this sense, his sacrifice was not just a role of the head of household but meant the pain and hunger of lay people who were scapegoats by the fancy industrial development.

Despite his effort and diligence, he was neglected by the society of development centered and the age of materialism. There’s nobody to support him. Literally, he became the invisible man whom no one found or became aware of. And it might already be suggested by the first page he would be the invisible man because Man-Su’s voice was only excluded to speak.

If you read this book, you can experience vividly the modern and comtemporary history of South Korea(60s-90s). Those who were named ‘contemporaries’ in the past and we in now may be so lonely beings to endure their or our times.

In this island of invisible men, what is the thing you can hold up?

이 소설의 주인공, 만수. 흔하디 흔한 이름 하나에 거미줄처럼 엮인 수만 가지의 감정이 끈끈이처럼 들러붙는다. 그의 탄생부터 투명인간이 되기까지, 독자인 당신은 그의 인생을 함께 살아내고 느끼면서 끝내는 깊고 짧은 탄식과 함께 책을 덮게 될 것이다.

소설의 배경은 60년대부터 90년대까지 이어지고, 이야기 속의 화자는 만수라는 주인공을 중심으로 그의 주변인들의 다양한 시선으로 전개된다.

만수는 가난한 농가의 3남 3녀 중 넷째로 태어난다. 그는 외모가 뛰어나지도 머리가 아주 명석하지도 않지만, 어릴 적부터 선하고 배려가 깊으며 우직했다. 그의 어린 시절을 함께 울고 웃다 보면 앞으로 만수, 그가 짊어질 삶의 무게가 서서히 느껴진다.

개천에서 용 나 듯 그의 큰 형은 서울에 있는 명문대에 입학했지만 가난이 주는 고통을 이겨내지 못하고 힘들게 생활을 하다가 베트남 전쟁에 자원 입대하고 결국 전사하고 만다. 큰형의 죽음으로 가족들은 큰 슬픔에 빠지는데, 이 대목에서 ‘총칼로 권력을 잡는 민주주의’에 가슴을 치며 오열하는 만수 할아버지의 대사는 2000년대를 살고 있는 우리들에게도 가슴 뻐근하게 다가올 것이다. 큰형의 죽음으로 소설의 모든 집중은 만수에게로 쏠린다.

이제 정말의 ‘주인공’이 된 만수는 남은 형제들을 위해 묵묵히 희생하기 시작한다. 그의 희생은 단순히 가장의 역할이라는 의미를 넘어 우리나라 산업 발달과 함께 그 화려한 경제 성장 뒷면에 숨겨진 수많은 배고픔과 자본주의에 짓밟히고 떠넘겨진 가난한 자들의 고통을 대표하기도 한다.

그의 끊임없는 노력과 인내로 시간은 시간답게 흘렀다. 차마 지나간 추억이라고 가볍게 웃으며 말할 수 없는 일들도 있었고, 잘 견뎌냈다고 가슴을 쓸어내린 날들도 있었다. 이 책은 그야말로 섬세하게 새겨놓은 한 권의 인생인 셈이다. 그런 그에게 세월은 어떤 보상을 주었을까?

투명인간, 만수는 악착같이 성실함을 무기로 살아왔지만 개발중심과 물질만능의 사회로부터 철저하게 소외되고 만다. 그의 노력 따위는 지긋지긋한 돈의 논리에 묵살되고 그를 알아봐주는 이도, 또 수고했다고 어깨를 다독여 줄 이도 없었다. 말 그대로 그 누구 하나 알아차리지 못하는 투명인간이 되고 말았다. 어쩌면 이 소설의 화자로 단 한 번도 등장 하지 않았던 만수는 책의 첫 페이지부터 투명인간임을 암시하고 있었을지도 모를 일이다.

굵직한 한국의 근, 현대사를 한바탕 살아본 느낌이다. ‘현대인’들이라 불리는 과거의 그들, 그리고 지금의 우리들은 어찌 보면 참 쓸쓸하고 외로운 존재들이 아닌가 싶다.

투명인간의 섬, 그 거대한 아일랜드에서 우리는 과연 무엇으로 견뎌낼 수 있을까?
