ROVE magazine’s 2nd edition issue is DMZ. It is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between South Korea and North Korea. Travel to the DMZ
The Korean Demilitarized, DMZ is closed by 15 cities and gun included Cheorwon, Yeoncheon, Incheon, Yanggu.
It is not guaranteed that these places are the most beautiful in the world or excellent.
But you can feel the only emotion with no parallel anywhere else in the world.
Whatever it is, it has already enough reason to travel there.

 DMZ로 떠나는 여행
DMZ는철원, 화천, 연천, 인천, 고성, 양구등 15개시, 군에 인접해있습니다.
그 지역들이 세상 어느 곳 보다 아름답거나, 대한민국의 어느 땅 보다 훌륭하다고 말할 수는 없습니다.
그러나 당신이 가본 그 어떤 곳에서도 겪지 못한 감정을 느낄 수 있습니다.
그게 무엇이든, 그것만으로 여행의 이유는 충분합니다.

When i had seen a road sign ‘Hwacheon’, finally, I recognized where I am. There is DMZ at a moderate distance. No one hurried up or feels stuffy because many military bus which passed by the road ceaselessly in there. Hwacheon is so calm like a Paro lake. We can feel fresh water flavor in Hwacheon, due to there are several highs mountains. If I breathe deeply, fresh air tickles my lung and ribs gradually. I encounter real image of Hwacheon on the bicycle neither car nor walking tour.

The night of Hwacheon is clam like a lake. I stare into the air without focus. I have to early wake up for see a wet fog of Paro lake which it is the most beautiful scene I had never seen. I am winding down after an exhausting day where I stay. I set up tent and fold screen by mountain. There is a Paro lake end of bicycle road. Hwacheon’s life, water is always loyalty. I could not believe the fact that the shadow of death hang upon Paro lake. There just was a deathly hush nearby Paro lake at that moment.

화천이라는 푯말이 보이는 순간부터 DMZ 접경 지역이라는 사실이 실감 났다. 끊임없이 지나가는 군인들을 가득 실은 군용 트럭과 느릿느릿한 그 속도에 아무도 경적을 울리거나 답답해 하지 않는다. 화천을 가득 메우고 있는 물처럼 그 곳에서는 모든 것이 정적인 것만 같다. 산이 많아 공기가 맑은 화천에서는 상쾌한 물내음이 난다. 크게 한 번 숨을 들이키면 맑고 시원한 공기가 갈비뼈를 간질인다. 자동차나 도보 여행으로는 느끼기 힘든 화천의 속살을, 자전거 위에서 마주한다.

화천의 밤을 만난다. 파로호의 물안개가 피는 고요하고 가슴 벅차는 장면을 만나려면 새벽 일찍 일어나야 한다. 종일 자전거로 화천을 둘러보고, 산을 병풍 삼아 텐트를 치고 고단한 몸을 달랜다. 자전거 도로가 끝나는 화천댐 넘어 파로호가 있다. 화천의 물은 무엇과 만나도 그 품위를 잃지 않는다. 모든 생명이 잠시 눈을 붙인 평온한 파로호에 전쟁의 그림자가 짙게 드리웠던 사실을 믿기 힘들다. 그때에도 여전히 호수는 잔잔히 숨죽이고 있을 뿐이었다.

 

About Hwacheon
Hwacheon County is a county in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The northern border parallels the Korean Demilitarized Zone, as close as nine kilometers in some places. Neighboring counties are Cheorwon to the northwest and north, Yanggu to the east, Chuncheon to the south, and the Gyeonggi-do province to the southwest. The county consists largely of mountains and rivers, between which are small farming communities, military bases and military training grounds. The area is renowned for its rivers, lake trout, indigenous otters, and natural scenery.

물의 도시라고 불리는 화천은 북쪽으로 9km 거리에 군사한계선을 두고 있으며 북서쪽으로는 철원, 동쪽으로는 양구, 남쪽으로는 춘천, 남서쪽으로는 경기도와 근접해있다. 군사한계선과 비무장지대에 인접해 있어 군인들의 모습을 비교적 쉽게 발견할 수 있으며 여느 지방 소도시에 비해서도 자연 그대로의 모습을 잘 유지하고 있다. 또한 화천댐과 파로호는 화천을 대표하는 관광명소로 각광받고 있으며 최근 들어 캠핑을 포함한 레포츠 명소로 떠오르고 있다.

 

Paro Lake’s history
Paro Lake is an artificial lake created due to the construction of Hwacheon Dam in 1944. It can hold up to 1 billion tons of water and because of its magnificent view and thick forests. It is also called the ocean in the mountain. During the Korean War, it was a fierce battle site due to the Hwacheon generator and also the place where three Chinese divisions were defeated.
President Rhee Seung-man ordered to call this lake Paro Lake to remember that this was where Korea defeated its enemies. The Paro Lake History Center has detailed records of the Battle of Paro Lake and talks about the destruction of the three Chinese divisions and the ROK Army 6th division that defended Hwacheon Dam. An observatory is located on the upper hill for visitors to get a birds-eye view of Paro Lake.

파로호는 대한민국 최북단에 위치하는 인공호수로 1939년에 착공하여 1944년 5월에 건설된 화천댐 이후로 조성되었다. 면적은 38.9km2으로 10억 톤의 물을 담을 수 있는 규모로 상류에는 평화의 댐이 있다. 이 지역은 38선 이북으로 8.15 광복 직후에는 소련군정 관할에 속하였으나 한국전쟁 이후 대한민국에 복속되었다. 댐 건설 당시 호수에 붙여진 이름은 ‘화천호’이며, ‘파로호’라는 이름은 한국전쟁 화천 지구 전투 때 조선인민군 및 중국인민해방군 수만 명을 수장하여 생긴 이름이다.
