ROVE magazine’s 2nd edition issue is DMZ. It is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between South Korea and North Korea. Travel to the DMZ
The Korean Demilitarized, DMZ is closed by 15 cities and gun included Cheorwon, Yeoncheon, Incheon, Yanggu.
It is not guaranteed that these places are the most beautiful in the world or excellent.
But you can feel the only emotion with no parallel anywhere else in the world.
Whatever it is, it has already enough reason to travel there.

 DMZ로 떠나는 여행
DMZ는철원, 화천, 연천, 인천, 고성, 양구등 15개시, 군에 인접해있습니다.
그 지역들이 세상 어느 곳 보다 아름답거나, 대한민국의 어느 땅 보다 훌륭하다고 말할 수는 없습니다.
그러나 당신이 가본 그 어떤 곳에서도 겪지 못한 감정을 느낄 수 있습니다.
그게 무엇이든, 그것만으로 여행의 이유는 충분합니다.

It seems like just one more step, but young soldier blocked my way. They said to me “This is an exclusion zone for civilians”. I couldn’t remember very well that how many times I heard that in Goseong. Yes, I know. This is Goseong where is northernmost of Korean Peninsula. In short, Here is the end I could forward. There are many military structures in Goseong for the way to the Unification observatory. These are prepared for war. Although i live normal life, Goseong prepares always war. This is a weird life.

After unfamiliar experience, i feel that i just arrived in some strange country. But the moment i found Geumgang mountain’s beautiful peak and the vast east sea, my unfamiliar feel go away like magic. A dismal scene by a watery sky and beautiful sea’s harmony is becoming very well with Unification observatory. Because, if there was beautiful & brilliant sky, my desire would be more bigger for there. Yes, Geumgang mountain was over there in North Korea.

We can see amazing scene at Unification observatory you won’t find anywhere else. In short, there are three major religion’s structures in same place. Besides a statue of the Virgin Mary, there are Maitreya of Buddhiusm. If you see them on the top of Unification observatory, you can find them all at once. Even though, you are not a religious person, you can feel a series of piousness. DMZ is still remain big scar for Korea’s history.

한 발만 더 다가가면 될 것 같은데, 아직은 앳된 얼굴을 한 군인들이 막아 섰다. “여기는 오시면 안 됩니다.” 고성에서 제일 많이 듣고 본 단어. 최북단. 통행금지. 우리가 갈 수 있는 이 땅의 끝. 통일전망대를 향하는 길 뿐 아니라 고성 곳곳에서 도로 양 옆에 국방색으로 칠해진 콘크리트 벽을 심심치 않게 볼 수 있다. 바로 최북단 지역으로 전쟁을 대비한 군사시설이다. 우리에겐 평화로운 일상이지만 이곳은 항상 전쟁을 준비하고 있다. 생경하다.

평소라면 겪지 않아도 될 번거로운 절차들을 거치고 나니 외국에 온 것만 같다. 아주 가까이 보이는 금강산 봉우리들과 짙은 푸른빛의 동해가 한 눈에 들어오는 찰나, 그 간의 번거로움이 쉽게 잊힌다. 곧 비가 쏟아질 것 같은 흐린 하늘이 푸른 바다와 맞닿으니 조금은 음산한 풍경이 통일 전망대와 잘 어울린다. 눈부신 햇빛이 부서지고 있었다면, 절대 갈 수 없는 그곳을 향한 애상과 대조되어 의미 없이 아름답기만 할 것 같다.

통일전망대에는 전 세계 어느 곳에서도 볼 수 없는 진기한 풍경이 자리 잡고 있다. 바로 3대 종교시설이 함께 위치해 있는 것. 성모마리아 상 바로 옆에 미륵불이 나란히 자리 잡고 있다. 전망대에서 바라보면 북쪽을 향해 손을 모으고 있는 마리아와 자비로운 표정의 미륵불이 한 눈에 보여 종교인이 아니어도 애틋한 마음이 든다.

 

About Goseong
Goseong is situated in the northernmost trip of Gangwondo. 46% of this land is restricted to military protection area. Goseong is located between Geumgangsan and Seoraksan and has natural beauties including moutains, beaches, lakes and valleys, and tourist attractions such as Unification observatory, Alps ski resort and culture relics. So it is one of the best tourist attractions.

고성은 강원도의 행정 구역으로, 한반도 동해안에 있는 지역이다. 38선 이북 지역이라 1945년에 소군정 영역으로 편입되었으나, 한국 전쟁을 거치며 철원군처럼 분단되었다. 남북 분단으로 인해 대한민국과 조선민주주의인민공화국 양 쪽 모두의 행정 구역으로 되어 있다. 대한민국 고성군의 군청 소재지는 간성읍이고, 조선민주주의 인민공화국 고성군의 군청 소재지는 고성읍이다.
