Early Sunday I decided to go west of Chuncheon to Samaksan mountain and Deungseon Falls, a hugely popular hiking destination for Chuncheon residents.

I took the subway from Chuncheon station to Gangchon, and a bus from Gangchon to to one of two starting points to the mountain. The course I took was Uiam Dam ticket office – Sangwonsa Temple – mountain summit – Hongguksa – Biseon restaurent – Deungseon Falls – Samaksan Mountain ticket office(6km,3hrs). The mountains terrain changed dramatically after the first few kilometres and it was a scramble & rock climbing effort to the top(not one for people scared of hights).

The mountain has several steep valleys and unique rock formations covered with thick forests and a breathtaking summit view of regional mountain ranges. The return down the mountain via the falls was relievingly smooth and the sounds of water from the small falls soothing.

I would highly recommend this as a weekend trip from Seoul. The area has an array of alternative sites aswell such as Gugok falls, House of Kim Jeong-eun and many eco villages and I will most definetly be making a trip back.
