“What do reckon of a thousand acres?
Have you thought of the forest much? Of the leaves or the bark and the deep roots of the tree’s which stretch downwards and curl at the lisp of their endings? Have you thought of endings much? Or the ache of a deep city?
What of a person waiting alone as a train pulls in to station? What of endings then? What of the long and complex procession of history & time that leads to them as much as it does to you?
What do you think to the great vastness of yourself? Without endings do you feel its lightness as it brushes your skin? How is the cloth stitched? How is it embroidered? Can you see what patterns you have made by the simple inclination of your sight? Are they plural, multiple, intoxicating also?
How have you loved others? How do remember people you do not know? Can you see that it is only these two questions that are of any importance at all?
How is it to catch a glance of yourself dressed by the eyes of someone else? How do you choose to dress others in the lengths of themselves that are long and out of sight? That are along horizons which do not reveal themselves but still cast a dance of light and shadow…as one disposition caresses another?
Can you count with each atom of your body each connection between them and you? And then once again can you count, with the brief darting movement of your eyes upon the movement of my pen and the wordless movement of my lips as I sound out each phrase the connection between you and I?
Is it pleasant to you?
Is it constant?
Why are you so lonely?
Does it come and then go and then sadden you knowing that the completeness of its being is not a thing that wants to last?
Do you call to it?
Give it a name? A story? An image? A gender?
Do you look for it amongst dark ancestral nights? In dim lit cheap hotels? In streets steaming with crowds? In the slowness of yesterday? On long roads? In endings?
In books? In letters? In poetry? In melody? In music? In blue eyes and green eyes and brown eyes? In his arms? In her arms? In a hand running through hair? In the moistened lips of thighs kissing irrevocably and carelessly in hopeful moonlight? In solid fantasies? In tragic ecstasy? In murals of intimacy and utter empathy scrawled on each and every wall?
Do you look towards it in sex? In love? The unstoppable urge that only wants to create?
Which way do you peer?
What do you see?
Why do you feel so lonely? What is it that deserves the quiet auction of your grief?
Who do you see when you close your eyes?
How do you choose to celebrate the great improbability of yourself?”
