Made in Nature, ‘Abstract painting by mold’ 시간이 그린 추상화가 있습니다

I passed a ruined small apartment for rebuilding in Korea by 11 years ago. I was moved by curiosity to enter the ruined small apartment, I looked all around. At that time, I saw the wallpaper, which torn out by something. I found black mold, which it made a consistent pattern, it made me remind a scrap of abstract painting.

When I tore up the rest wallpaper, I faced a huge abstract painting on the wall made by the mold. It was without a doubt an amazing experience. Although it was a result of decomposition, I make bold to say that it was a great masterpiece by nature.

Most of the metro station in Paris has the origin form without some repair work since completion in 1900s. As it so happens, I encountered an abstract painting from black mold one more time in there.

The huge inside wall of metro station building made a canvas, the trace of rotten water made uncountable brush’s movement, the things reborn as the something new image. I introduce some images, while I captured on the nature.

11년 전, 20대 초반의 평범한 대학생으로 지내던 시절의 경험이다. 나는 재건축 때문에 입주민들이 떠나고 거의 폐허가 된 작은 아파트 앞을 지난 적이 있었다. 호기심에 이끌려 그 안으로 들어가 건물 이곳 저곳을 살펴보던 중 뜯어진 벽지 사이로 일정한 패턴을 이루고 있는 검은 곰팡이들이 나의 시선을 사로잡았고 추상화의 한 단편을 떠올렸다.

그리고 조금의 망설임도 없이 나머지 벽지를 뜯어내 목도한  ‘벽 한 면을 수 놓은 거대한 추상화’같은 광경은 아직도 이따금씩 떠올리는 인상적인 기억이다. 비록 역겨운 부패가 낳은 결과물일지라도, 나에게 그 모습은 어떤 대가가 그린 명작보다도 더 인상적인 작품이었기 때문이다.

1900년대에 지하철이 생긴 이래로, 현재의 파리 지하철 역은 약간의 보수공사를 제외하고 거의 그 모습 그대로를 간직하고 있다. 그 곳에서 나는 다시 한 번 그 것들과 마주한다. 지하철역사내의 거대한 벽면은 캔버스를, 부패한 물이 지나온 흔적은 붓의 터치가 되어 오랜 시간 동안 축적된 부패의 결과가 이미지를 만들어 냈다. 나는 그 곳에서 조우한 자연적인 현상을 사진으로 담아 더 오래 시간 동안 또렷하게 기억하고자 한다.
