The heart of Vatican city, Musei Vaticani 바티칸의 심장, 바티칸 미술관

The Vatican Museums are the museums of the Vatican City and are located within the city’s boundaries. They display works from the immense collection built up by the Popes throughout the centuries including some of the most renowned classical sculptures and most important masterpieces of Renaissance art in the world.

Pope Julius II founded the museums in the early 16th century. The Sistine Chapel with its ceiling decorated by Michelangelo and the Stanze della Segnatura decorated by Raphael are on the visitor route through the Vatican Museums. In 2013, they were visited by 5.5 million people, which combined makes it the 5th most visited art museum in the world. There are 54 galleries, or salas, in total with the Sistine Chapel, notably, being the very last sala within the Museum.

지구상에서 가장 작은 도시이자 카톨릭 교황국인 바티칸에 위치한 바티칸 미술관은 역대 로마 교황이 수집한 방대한 미술품·고문서·자료를 수장하고, 또 미켈란젤로, 라파엘로 등 대가들이 직접 그린 내부의 벽화·장식으로 유명한 곳이다.

세계에서 가장 많은 방문객이 찾은 5대 미술관 중으로 한 곳으로 꼽히는 바티칸 미술관은 16세기에 교황 율리오 2세에 의해 설립되었으며 ‘아포크슈오메노스’, ‘벨베데레의 아폴로’, 미켈란젤로의 ‘천지 창조’, ‘최후의 심판’, 라파엘로의 ‘성체의 논의’, ‘아테네학당’, ‘그리스도의 변용’, 레오나르도 다 빈치의 ‘성 히에로니무스’ 등의 작품들을 소장하고 있다.
