Such a fine day in Rome 로마의 어느 멋진 날

Piazza Venezia is a major circus and the central hub of Rome, Italy, in which many thoroughfares intersect, like Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via del Corso. Palazzo Venezia was the former embassy of the city of the Republic of Venice to Rome. It is dominated by the imposing Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy. In 2009, during excavations for the Rome C Metro Line, ancient remains of what has been identified as emperor Hadrian’s Athenaeum were unearthed in the middle of the square.

1871년 이탈리아 통일을 기념하기 위해 조성된 베네치아광장은 북쪽으로는 코르소 거리가, 남쪽으로는 비토리오 에마누엘레 2세 기념관이 자리해 있다. 또한 16세기 베네치아 공화국의 로마 대사관 역할을 하던 베네치아 궁전을 볼 수 있으며 베네치아 궁전은 제2차 세계대전 때 독재자 무솔리니가 집무실로 사용한 곳으로 유명하다. 현재 르네상스 예술품 박물관으로 사용되고 있다.

 

Piazza Navona is a city square in Rome, Italy. It is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, built in 1st century AD, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium. The ancient Romans came there to watch the agones(games), and hence it was known as “Circus Agonalis” (competition arena). It is believed that over time the name changed to in avone to navone and eventually to navona.

테베레 강과 코르소 거리 사이에 위치해있는 나보나 광장은 도미티아누스 황제가 만든 황제 도미티아누스 경기장이 있던 곳으로, 경기장의 관중석 계단이 있던 그 자리에 오늘날 광장을 빙 둘러 감싸고 있는 건물들이 세워졌다. 현재 나보나 광장에는 바로크풍의 분수가 셋 있는데, 그 중에서 제일 유명한 것이 광장 가운데 자리잡은 4대 강 분수로서 베르니니가 설계한 것이다.

 

Piazza di Spagna, at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, is one of the most famous squares of Rome, Italy. It owes its name to the Palazzo di Spagna, seat of the Embassy of Spain among the Holy See.

영화 ‘로마의 휴일’에 오드리 햅번이 아이스크림을 먹었던 광장으로 유명한 로마의 스페인 광장은17세기에 교황청 스페인 대사가 이곳에 본부를 두면서 스페인 광장이라고 불리게 되었다.

 

The Mouth of Truth is an image, carved from Pavonazzo marble, of a man-like face, located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. The sculpture is thought to be part of a first-century ancient Roman fountain, or perhaps a manhole cover, portraying one of several possible pagan gods, probably Oceanus.

오드리 햅번 주연의 영화 ‘로마의 휴일’에 나와 더욱 유명해진 ‘진실의 입’은 산타 마리아 인 코스메딘 성당의 한쪽 벽면을 장식하고 있는 원형 석판이다. 원래 성당 근처의 하수도 뚜껑으로 사용되었다고 하며 진실의 입이란 이름은 중세 시대 때 사람들을 심문할 때 진실을 말하지 않으면 손이 잘려도 좋다고 서약하게 한 데서 유래했다고 한다.

 

The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant’Angelo(Castle of the Holy Angel), is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. The Castel was once the tallest building in Rome.

천사의 성이라고도 불리는 산탄젤로 성은 로마 제국의 황제 하드리아누스가 자신과 가족을 위해 세운 무덤이었다. 로마 제국이 멸망한 이후에는 로마 교황청의 성곽 겸 요새로 사용되었고 현재는 군사 박물관으로 사용되고 있다.
