My wife and I who self claimed to be wine enthusiasts have decided to go on a year journey around the 14 countries and visit wineries and vineyards in March 2014. This series is a collection of stories and experiences of wine, vineyards and wineries from the year journey.

The first place we visited for wine tasting after leaving Korea was National Wine Center in Adelaide Australia. We have checked the information of the center through their website but our experience with the place was quite disappointing. One consolation in this misfortune was their beautiful botanic garden. Now that we think about it after the trip around the world, I think it was quite unusual for them to not have an entrance fee to such a wide clean botanic garden with many interesting features. If you have any chance to visit Adelaide, please don’t miss the opportunity.

The reason why the National Wine Center was disappointing was purely our misfortune. As you will see on their websit(http://www.wineaustralia.com.au/), there are many things to try. Among those experiences, we have had the most expectation on ‘Wine Discovery Journey’ Program. The program was exactly how it has said: travel and discover wine.

We were not sure of the details since we haven’t had the chance but we believe it was to provide various experiences to learn Australian wine and wine history with an exhibition. However the program was on hold due to renovation. The program seems to provide a tour of giant cellar in the basement as well. The cellar is supposed to be the biggest one in southern hemisphere as it holds more than 38000 bottles of wine. 12000 of them, Australian wine. However we had to turn around with only a few pictures since the cellar was also under renovation.

To tend the bitter moment, we tried wine tasting at a wine bar called ‘Wined’ on the first floor. The wine bar was also partially under construction but fortunately they allowed tasting of a few wine bottles. Now they have transformed the place into a wine bar where visitors can taste 120 kinds of wine.
Out of wines we have tried a sparkling wine from Adelaide hills ‘Croser’ and a sauvignon blanc ‘Josef Chromy’ which was made in Tasmania island were the two wines we could say ‘proper’. They were both very fresh and served at the right temperature that could heal our exhausted body from strolling around the botanic garden. It still put us in great mood by just thinking about it.

The National Wine Center has a place where they had planted several types of grape vines so if you have never seen grapes for wine brewery, this could be a meaningful visit. After leaving the unsatisfying misfortune, we have ran into ‘Adelaide Hills Wine Festival’ where people could taste wines of Adelaide hills wine producers for free when we were driving around the town. We couldn’t pass up on that opportunity. With 5 dollars for a glass, you can taste 24 different wines from different winery booths. It was just a perfect opportunity to taste all aspects of Adelaide hills wine at such a cheap price.
We have tried all 24 wineries’ wine, some were casual enough enjoy without much of though but some had flavors that make you think for a while.

These three wineries are our favorites. In terms of quality, Norton Summit was the best. I promised my wife to take our rent car to the vineyard but we couldn’t make it. The wine does hold its reputation of organic farming, fermenting naturally grown yeast and tending every grape vines with their own hands.

By Jingo, as the name suggests, has very colorful character. They made this unexpectedly impressive Montepulcianto Zinfandel wine, which is not easy to find in Australia. Even their label was so strong that I still remember exactly what it looks like. Wicks had traditional Australian Shiraz. How should I put it? It feels more like meeting a exemplary student. After all it was a very fortunate day.

열렬한 와인 애호가였던 우리 부부는 2014년 3월, 현지 와인 산지를 탐방하는 것을 목표로 1년 동안 전 세계 와인 산지 14개국을 여행하고 돌아왔다. 이 시리즈는 우리 부부가 1년 동안 경험했던 와인, 산지, 그리고 와이너리에 대한 이야기들이다.

우리가 한국을 떠나 와인과 관련해서 처음으로 경험한 것은 호주 애들레이드의 보태닉 가든 안에 있는 국립와인센터였다. 이 센터에 대해서 이미 이곳 홈페이지를 통해서 알고 있었는데, 미리 알았기에 방문했을 당시 실망이 컸다. 다만 국립와인센터가 위치한 애들레이드 보태닉 가든이 생각보다 근사해서 아쉬움을 달랠 수 있었다. 세계 여행을 마친 지금 생각해보니, 그렇게 넓고 깨끗하고, 볼 것 많은 보태닉 가든 입장이 무료였다는 것이 신기하다. 애들레이드를 방문하게 되면 꼭 가보기를 바란다.

국립와인센터가 실망스러웠다는 것은 순전히 우리의 불운이었다. 국립와인센터의 홈페이지(http://www.wineaustralia.com.au/)를 들어가 보면 알겠지만, 여기서 즐길 수 있는 것들이 여러 가지가 있는데, 우리가 가장 기대했던 것은 ‘Wine Discovery Journey’ 프로그램이었다. 말 그대로 와인을 발견하고 여행하는 것이다. 해보지 않아서 구체적인 것은 모르겠지만, 와인과 관련한 전시를 통해 방문객들이 와인의 역사라든지, 호주 와인의 현재라든지, 여러 가지를 경험할 수 있도록 한 것 같다. 이 프로그램이 우리가 갔을 당시에는 건물 리노베이션으로 중단된 상태였다.

이 교육 프로그램의 일환으로 건물의 맨 아래에 있는 엄청난 셀러도 구경할 수 있는 듯하다. 이 셀러는 남반구에서 가장 큰 셀러 중 하나라고 하는데, 무려 38,000여 병의 와인이 종류별로 저장되어 있다고 한다. 이 중에서 호주 와인은 12,000병이다. 물론 이곳도 리노베이션이어서 들어가 보지 못하고 위에서 사진만 찍었다. 아쉬움에 1층에 있는 ‘Wined’라는 이름의 와인 바에서 몇 가지 와인을 골라서 테이스팅을 했다. 이 와인 바도 당시에는 리노베이션 중이었는데, 몇 가지 와인은 테이스팅이 가능했었다. 현재는 120여 종에 이르는 와인을 테이스팅할 수 있는 곳으로 변신했다.

여기서 마신 애들레이드 힐즈의 ‘Croser’ 스파클링 와인과 태즈매니아 섬에서 만들어진 ‘Josef Chromy’의 소비뇽 블랑은 이번 여행에서 최초로 경험한, 제대로 된, 와인이었다. 둘 모두 신선했고, 알맞은 온도에 서빙되어, 보태닉 가든을 쏘다니느라 지친 우리의 심신을 업해 주었다. 지금 생각해도 기분 좋았던 와인이었다. 국립와인센터에는 여러 가지 품종의 포도나무를 심어놓은 장소가 있다. 만약 와인을 만드는 와인용 포도나무를 처음 보는 것이라면, 의미가 있을 듯하다.

국립와인센터에서 아쉬움을 뒤로 하고 시내를 쏘다니던 중에 길거리에서 애들레이드 힐스 지역의 생산자들의 와인을 공짜로 테이스팅할 수 있는 ‘Adelaide Hills Wine Festival’을 지나가게 되었다. 시음을 안 할 수 없다. 글라스 값 인당 5달러를 지불하면 부스를 차린 24 곳 와이너리들의 와인을 모두 테이스팅할 수 있다. 굉장히 저렴한 가격에 애들레이드 힐스 와인의 면면을 느껴보기에 완벽한 시간이었다.
24곳 와이너리의 와인을 모두 시음했는데, 저렴한 가격에 편안하게 마실 수 있는 와인이 있었고, 신중하게 테이스팅 해야 했던 것들도 있었다.

그 중 이 세 와이너리가 정말 좋았다. 퀄리티만으로만 보면 Norton Summit이 최고였다. 렌트카 끌고 가자고 와이프와 마시면서 약속했는데, 결국은 불발. 유기농 재배, 자연적인 야생효모 발효, 모든 포도나무 관리를 손으로 한다는 것 등. 공들여서 만든 티가 나는 와인이다.

By Jingo는 이름처럼 와인들이 다 개성 넘친다. 호주 와인으로 마셔보기 힘든, Montepulciano, Zinfandel로 와인을 만드는데, 그 퀄리티가 우습지 않다. 레이블까지 강렬해서 기억에 오래 남는다. Wicks는 쉬라즈가 호주 정석의 풍미를 지녔다. 뭐랄까 모범생 같다고 해야 할까? 운이 좋은 날이었다.
