The unforgettable Spanish cuisine of my life, Paella 내 인생의 잊지 못할 스페인 음식

The only different interest I had with the guy whom I had gotten along so well was our hobby. My hobbies such as watching movies and listening to music were such boring things to do to him. The only thing he was enthusiastic about was soccer. Perhaps you could argue that soccer is just as common hobby to all man as movies and music to most of people, but the problem was that he was interested only in soccer. He just couldn’t stand sitting still on his seat for 2 hours to finish one movie. What is worse was the songs he hums sometimes were the soccer anthems for his favorite European soccer teams.

As a person who was mildly excited about soccer only when Korean team made it to the semi final in 2002 world cup, it was difficult to feel included when I had to meet his friends and hear them talking about soccer. The worst part about it was when I had to meet the girlfriend of one his friends who seems to be drawing the soccer topic out of these guys so mysteriously. I just wanted to punch her in her head when she said “Let’s talk about something Jae Min knows too” after I had been going through some side dishes for 2 hours without getting involved in soccer talk.

El Classico
The game that got him 10 times more excited than I was when one of my favorite director released a movie after 10 years of break was ‘El Classico’ the FC Barcelona Vs Real Madrid. As diehard fan of FC Barcelona, the intensity he had was as crazy as when the seniors from my university who used to get so intense about will it be ‘Yeon-Ko’ game or ‘Ko – Yeon’ game. (Yeon stands for Yeonsei University and Ko stands for Korea University. They are the biggest rivals to each other.)

As I was able to learn that “Barca” wasn’t a name of an actress but an abbreviation of FC Barcelona only by listening their conversation, I had already known that ‘EL Classico’ was the game of the century between the biggest rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. They had gathered like there is some sort of ritual whenever there was a big game and the only thing I could do was to find an amazing chicken place that delivers as quickly as possible among their competitors. My attempt at jumping into the conversation as I screamed ‘I know what that it too!’ after reading soccer magazines felt quite idiotic after while, I had to quit.

I had to announce I would cook the late night snack for the El Classico game night since my cooking skill was the only thing I could present before this gang to impress them. Then I started studying Spanish cuisine, which could also redirect their soccer talk into my interests. Thanks to my love for food, my cooking skills can shine bright when such situation rises. The guys welcomed my suggestion of delicious food with a promise of skipping dinner to secure their empty stomach.

I’ve decided to cook seafood paella and Cocido Madrielno soup. It was exciting for me to guess which of these dishes will these guys finish first just like they were excited about their game of who will win. The Cosido Madrielno wasn’t doing quite well since it was a soup dish while the game was on when paella was taken away at light speed with sounds of spoons scratching the bottom of the pot. However just like the game that had been turned the whole world upside down with the infamous corner kick, my Cosido Madrielno also revealed its bottom when the guys needed something to sooth their stomach during the break as they were slowly waking up from the alcohol they had drank during the game.

The guys weren’t quite happy about the game that had ended in tie, but my dishes that had the same result was the perfect finale for me. What made it even better was when the problematic “diehard soccer girl” was mumbling something like ‘chicken and beer is still the tradition for soccer game night’, her boyfriend shot her down by saying “What are you talking about after enjoying such sincerely delicious food?!” which was the highlight of my night. Perhaps they were just being nice, but they even talked about Spanish cuisine with me.

Also I had a pretty good explanation when the guys were curious about why one of the angry Barcelona fans threw a piglet’s head into the ground. “I am not really sure but may be because one of the Spanish traditional food is roasted piglet head”. Then I promised them to cook piglet head for the next El Classico game when the guys said they felt like they were watching the game in Spain because of the food. The reason I can’t help but love cooking is because the food brings people together regardless of their cultural background. It’s faster than studying something you are not interested to please someone.

모든 것이 잘 맞던 그와 단 하나 다른 점이 있었다면 취미였다.  영화, 음악감상이라는 나의 보편적인 취향은 그에게 따분하기 짝이 없는 일이었다. 그가 열광하는 것은 오직 하나, ‘축구’였다. 어찌 보면 영화, 음악감상만큼이나 보편적인 남성취향이 아니냐고 하겠지만, 그에게는 그것이 ‘오직’ 축구라는 것이 문제였다.  두 시간 가까이 극장에 조용히 앉아서 영화를 보는 것만큼은 미치도록 싫어하는 그였다.  심지어 그가 매번 흥얼거리는 음악은 대체로 유럽 축구 팀의 응원가가 대부분이었다.

2002 월드컵 때 대한민국 국가대표팀이 4강에 올라가서야 겨우 흥분하는 정도였던 나로서는, 그와 친구들이 모여 ‘축구 대화’를 할 때마다 어쩐지 소외된 느낌이었다.  그 중에서도 최악은, 모일 때마다 축구 이야기를 묘하게 이끌어내는 그의 친구 중 한 명의 여자친구와 대면할 때였다. 특히 두 시간 넘게 대화에 끼지 못하고 안주거리만 뒤적거리던 나를 두고 ‘재민씨도 아는 이야기해요”라고 말하는 그녀는 콱 쥐어박고 싶을 정도로 얄미웠다.

엘 클라시코
내가 좋아하는 감독이 10년만에 내놓는 영화를 기다리는 것만큼, 아니 그보다 10배 정도 그를 설레게 한 것은 바로 FC바르셀로나와 레알 마드리드의 라이벌 전인 ‘엘 클라시코’였다. 스페인 축구 클럽인 FC 바르셀로나의 열렬한 팬이었던 그에게 그 경기를 앞둔 긴장감은, 대학교 시절 ‘연고전’이냐 ‘고연전’이냐를 두고 흥분하던 한 연대 선배만큼이나 결연했다.

여하튼 ‘바르샤’가 어떤 여배우의 이름이 아니라 축구 클럽인 ‘바르셀로나’의 약칭이라는 것 정도는 서당개로서 배운 나였으니, 엘 클라시코가 세기의 라이벌인 ‘FC 바르셀로나’와 ‘레알 마드리드’의 대결이라는 사실 정도는 알 무렵이었다. 중요한 축구경기가 열리는 밤마다 그들은 어떤 의식이라도 거행하는 것처럼 모였고, 내가 그 틈에서 할 수 있는 유일한 역할은 치열한 ‘치맥 배달’ 경쟁을 뚫고 가장 빨리 배달해주는 매장을 섭외해두는 것 정도였다. 어설프게 축구 잡지를 읽고 노력도 해봤지만, 어쩐지 ‘나도 이거 알아!’라고 애쓰는 것 같은 내 모양새가 안쓰러워 그만두기도 했다.

내세울 건 언제나 요리뿐이었던 나는 ‘엘 클라시코’가 열리는 밤 특별한 야식을 준비하겠다고 선언했다. 그리고 나는 이야기 거리로 이어질 수 있는 스페인 요리를 탐구하기 시작했다. 평소 음식을 좋아했던 내 습관은 그럴 때마다 빛을 발휘했다. 맛있는 음식을 대접하겠다는 이야기에 그와 그의 친구들은 굳이 저녁식사도 거르고 오겠다며 반가워했다.

볶음밥의 일종인 ‘해산물 빠에야’와 국물요리인 ‘코시노 마드리예노’를 준비했다. 그들이 경기에 집중하는 만큼, 둘 중 어떤 요리가 더 빨리 동나는가를 지켜보는 것은 내게 흥미진진했다. 국물 요리인 탓에 경기 내내 부진을 면치 못하던 ‘코시노 마드리예노’와 달리 ‘해산물 빠에야’는 박박 소리를 내며 누룽지까지 긁어 먹을 정도로 맹활약을 펼쳤다. 하지만 피구의 코너킥으로 전세가 뒤집혀버린 그 날의 경기처럼, 잠시 경기가 멈춘 동안 거하게 취한 술이 슬슬 깨던 그들이 해장이 필요해짐으로써 ‘코시노 마드리예노’ 또한 막판에 냄비 바닥을 드러냈다.

그 날의 경기가 무승부였던 사실은 그들을 시무룩하게 했지만, 두 요리의 무승부는 내게는 완벽한 피날레였다. 게다가 문제의 ‘축구광녀’가 ‘그래도 축구에는 치맥이 최고 아닌가…’라고 눈치 없이 중얼댔는데, 그녀의 남자친구는 ‘이렇게 정성껏 준비한 요리 두고 무슨 소리냐’고 면박을 준 순간은 단연코 그 날의 하이라이트였다. 그게 그들의 진심이든 아니든, 그 덕에 그들은 스페인 요리에 관한 이야기를 굳이 꽃피워주기까지 했으니.

더욱이 그 날 흥분한 바르셀로나의 팬들이 그라운드에 던진 온갖 물건 중 ‘새끼 돼지 머리’가 있었는데 누군가가 ‘하다 하다 돼지 머리까지 던지는 건 뭐냐’고 말하길래 이렇게 설명했다. ‘이유는 모르겠지만 스페인 대표적인 전통요리 중에 새끼돼지 통구이가 있어서일 수도 있어요’. 오늘의 음식 덕분에 마치 현지에서 관람하는 기분이었다는 그들에게 나는 그런 의미에서 다음 ‘엘 클라시코’에는 돼지 요리를 준비하겠다고 했다. 내가 요리를 사랑할 수 밖에 없는 이유는, 이렇듯 요리는 모든 문화의 교집합을 만들어낼 수 있는 무엇이라서가 아닐까. 내 취향이 아닌 것을 굳이 공부하는 것보다는 적어도 서로를 훨씬 빠르게 기쁘게 해줄 수 있으니까.
