An immature townie young man’s growing stroy 도시 남자 산 정착기, 영화 ‘우드잡’

‘Wood Job’ directed by Shinobu Yaguchi is a coming-of-age movie and at the same time a movie about the craftsmanship of professional forestry workers who adapt themselves to nature. The story is about an immature townie young man Hirano. After failing his university entrance examinations and being left by his girlfriend, decides to join a forestry training program on seeing a charming female girl on a promotional leaflet. However Hirano discovers that the training program is harder than he expected, working under the hard-working superior Yoki.

From boy to man
An immature urban youth Hirano seems not to arrive in this remote mountain village Kamusari by accident, but it was inevitable. There are no wireless phone connection also no convenience store in this remote village, but only children playing and elderly people chatting peacefully. Hirano attempts to go away from the village because of hard labor and his rough superior Yoki.

But finally he finish the 1year period training after much meandering. Hirano was a weak boy who was afraid of worms, snakes and leechs. mountain village youth playing snakes are also only jinggeu reopgi. He was just a frail boy who felt better inside a concrete cube of the city. He cut wood with heavy equipment and reap the seeds on top of the wood, he turned into slowly a man who sing a woodsman’s song.

“Cut one tree Eat our fill Lying like a cow Saw logs. Today grow old, Today grow old”

Woodsman’s awe for forests and trees
The movie ‘Wood job’shows,the working process of forestry workers how plant trees, take care of trees. Be the mountains man in the reaction furnace is thus she says. “If we cut and sell all the trees planted by our ancestors, how to live the next generation?” “Agriculture is rewarding to feel nurtured, they are looking for a taste of vegetables. But forestry’s work is for the next generation because the result comes after we are dead.”

Forestry workers are facing the seedlings for more than one hundred years and reap trees planted by the ancestors. They respect the Spirit of the mountains, and follow the providence of nature. Forestry workers are thought to whether people live in the present and the future at the same time living in the past.

야구치 시노부감독 Shinobu Yaguchi의 ‘우드잡’은 성장영화이자 동시에 자연의 법칙에 순응하는 직업인 임업종사자들인 산사나이들의 장인정신에 관한 영화이다. 대입낙방에 여자친구로부터 버림까지 받은 히라노는 철없는 도시 청년이다. 방황하던 그는 우연히 취업연수 팜플렛의 모델로 나온 예쁜 여자를 보고 무작정 산림관리 연수 프로그램에 지원한다. 연수프로그램이 진행되는 가무사리 마을은 기차를 여러 차례 갈아타야 도착하는 오지마을이다. 생각 없이 도착한 이 마을에서 팜플렛에서 본 예쁜 여자인 초등학교 선생님 나오키와의 만남은 그의 마음을 설레게 하지만 거친 산사나이 요키의 집에서 식객으로 머물며 생활하는 연수생활은 만만치 않다.

소년에서 사나이로
철딱서니 없는 도시청년 하라노는 우연이라고 하지만 어쩌면 필연에 의해 산속 마을 가무사리에 이른 듯 하다. 무선전화연결도 안되고 편의점도 없는 산골 마을 입구에는 평화로이 담소를 나누는 노인들과 아이들이 뛰어 놀뿐이다. 상상이상의 힘겨운 노동강도와 사수이자 산사나이로 잔뼈가 굵은 요키의 인정사정 없는 훈련방식을 견디지 못하고 몇 차례 마을에서 도망가려고 시도하지만 하나노는 우여곡절 끝에 연수 기간 1년을 꽉 채우게 된다.

도시청년 하라노는 산골마을의 벌레도 거머리도 뱀도 징그럽기만 하다. 그는 도시의 시멘트 콘크리트 사각형안에서 비로소 안정감을 느끼던 연약한 소년에 불과했다. 산골마을에서 중장비로 나무를 베고 하늘을 찌를 듯한 나무 꼭대기에 올라 씨앗을 거두고 나무꾼들의 노래를 자연스럽게 부르는 산사나이로 서서히 변해간다.

“나무 하나 자르면 배부르게 먹고 소처럼 누워 코골며 잔다. 오늘도 늙는다, 오늘도 늙는다.”

산사이들의 숲과 나무에 대한 경외
영화 ‘우드잡’은 나무 묘목을 심고, 나무를 돌보고 벌목하는 임업종사자들의 작업과정을 세세히 보여준다. 나카무라 임업 집안의 증조할아버지가 105년 심은 나무를 베어 경매시장에서 팔던 날 나무가 높은 가격에 팔리자 하라노는 나무 더 베어 팔면 부자가 되겠다며 흥분한다. 하라노의 반응에 산사나이들은 이렇게 말한다. “조상이 심은 나무를 전부 베어 팔면, 우리 다음 세대는 뭘 먹고 살아?” “농업은 내가 키운 채소의 맛을 보며 보람을 느낄 수 있지만, 임업은 우리가 한 일의 결과가 우리가 죽은 다음에 나와”

임업 종사자들은 백 년 이상을 바라보고 묘목을 한다. 그리고 조상이 심고 가꾼 나무를 거둔다. 이들은 산의 영을 모시고 자연의 섭리를 따른다. 영화는 입엄종사자들의 가감없는 이야기를 통해 현재를 살며 과거와 미래를 동시에 사는 진정한 장인의 이야기를 전하고 있다.
