LEE Ji Sun’s 2nd solo exhibition, /Yeon/ : reason though 이지선의 두 번째 개인전, ‘연 : 그러한 이유’

A young Korean artist, Lee Ji Sun’s the 2nd solo exhibition ‘/Yeon/ : reason though’ is held. In fact, Lee Ji Sun does activity in Paris, France. She has lived in France from 2008, finally, obtained of French National Superior Artistic Expression Diploma(DNSEP) in 2013. And as an artist, she has joined a member of AJAC(Association des Jeunes Artistes Coréens : Korean young artist association), Paris and Member of MDA (Maison Des Artistes : artist association of France), Paris, France.

You can visit Lee Ji Sun’s the 2nd solo exhibition from 28th August to 11th September in Scalatium Artspace Sangam, Seoul. In the exhibition, she shows some pieces which inspired by these four selected words(Chance, Fate, Nature, Story), she presents serial drawings echoing with each one of them, and two videos. Meanwhile, she will hold the 3rd solo exhibition with the video art works in January 2016.

Notes on the exhibition

Here may be the one. A number of reasons insist on the life of the self here and now. Impossible to be counted together or separated individually, memories of the past constitute the body and compose the soul in the present. Departing from two Chinese homonyms, < 緣/然 : /Yeon/> makes four distinct but related words which allow me to reunite the elements of myself or of my present. Things passed in front of the eyes, into the ears or on the surface of the skin make personal experiences, shared souvenirs, known or unknown little (hi)stories. And those incomplete and fragmented pieces get together like a puzzle in the flow of time and enroll a panoramic scene which differs for each viewer.

Inspired by these four selected words (Chance, Fate, Nature, Story), I present here serial drawings echoing with each one of them, and two videos give an entrance and an exit of the exhibition.

/ Yeon / Chance : Inexplicable and unpredictable situations connect us by accident or by chance, crossing the moment and the space. Without any scheduled appointments, I present panoramic drawings of hazardous scenes of anonymous people in unidentified backgrounds.

/ Yeon / Fate : Direct or Indirect reasons tie ‘you’ and ‘i’ together with a fine string called the destiny. The person who shared certain moments of life is shown in a fragmented frame, which not only contains the personal context but also makes a sort of graphic memo.

/ Yeon / Nature : The source element of all livings, the nature is itself the reason of the existence. It carries the traces of all of us and keeps us alive. Considering the particular composition of the gallery space, four drawings represent partially four seasons.

/ Yeon / Story : Even a torn sheet of paper has its very own history that no one ever knows. In a place which appears simply strange to certain people, the habitant sees the smallest stories made inside. The places which feel more or less familiar since I have been become the pieces of a puzzle which has no fixed composition.

사람과 사물, 나와 너 등 수 많은 관계 속에서 갈등하고 성장하는 우리 모두의 이야기를 독특한 시각으로 풀어내 온 작가, 이지선. 프랑스 파리에서 활동하는 젊은 한국 작가 이지선의 두 번째 개인전 ‘연 : 그러한 이유’가 개최되었다. 이지선 작가는 디종국립고등미술학교 학사과정을 졸업하고 2013년에는 프랑스 국립고등 조형미술석사를 취득했다. 2013년에는 프랑스 예술가 협회가입, 2014년에는 재불청년작가협회에 가입하며 활발한 작업 활동을 펼쳐왔다.

2015년 8월 28일부터 9월 11일까지 스칼라티움 아트스페이스 상암점에서 열리는 이번 전시회에서 이지선 작가는 4개의 연(우연, 인연, 자연, 사연)과 그 의미에 따라 시리즈로 작업된 드로잉 작품들과 두 점의 비디오 작품을 공개했다. 한편 이지선 작가는 내년 초 열릴 세 번째 개인전을 통해 그녀만의 독특한 시선을 담아낸 영상 작업을 공개할 예정이다.

작가의 말

여기에 있다. 지금 이곳에 살아감에 대한 이유는 수도 없이 많다. 하나하나 세어볼 수도 혹은 구별해서 떨어뜨릴 수도 없는 지나온 기억들은 현재의 몸을 만들고 정신을 이루며 방향을 제시한다. 두가지의 한자(緣/然)에서 온 4개의 얽히고 설킨 <연>에서 출발하여, 현재의 나, 혹은 나의 현재를 이루고 있는 요소들을 이번 전시를 통해 모으고자 한다. 그 동안 눈 앞, 귓가나 손길에 지나온 것들은 내 개인적인 경험이자 누군가와 함께 나눈 추억, 혹은 누구나 알아차릴 수 있는 하나의 사소한 역사이다. 그리고 그러한 부분적이고 불완전한 장면들이 시간의 흐름 속에서 퍼즐처럼 올바른 자리를 찾아 모여가고, 각자 자신만이 볼수 있을 상상의 파노라마를 만든다.

4개의 연 (우연, 인연, 자연, 사연)은 그 의미에 따라 시리즈로 작업된 드로잉 작품들이 공간의 방향에 따라 소개되고, 두점의 비디오 작품은 그러한 전시의 입구와 출구 역할을 한다.

연 / Hasard : 설명할 수 없는 <우연>들은 예상하지 못했던, 하지만 틀림이 없는 그 순간과 공간을 교차하여 우리를 한데 모으고 서로를 연결한다. 특별한 약속이나 이어가는 만남없이 순간에 지나간 장면들과 이름모를 사람들을 담은 작은 일상의 파노라마들을 보여준다.

연 / Destin : 직접적이고 간접적인 이유들은 가느다란 실과 같은 <인연>의 끈으로 ‘나’와 ‘너’를 잇고 풀리지 않을 매듭을 짓는다. 인연은 과거의 한 순간을 공유한 사람들의 부분적인 초상화로 표현하여 한편으로는 지극히 개인적인 이야기를 담고 한편으로는 끄적거린 메모와도 같은 드로잉들을 보여준다.

연 / Nature : 살아가는 모든것들의 원천이자 원소인 <자연>은 그 자체가 존재의 이유며 모두의 흔적을 담고 생명을 이어간다. 전시장소의 특징적인 설치공간을 이용하여 4계절의 부분적인 장면을 담은 작품들을 보여준다.

연 / Histoire : 길바닥에 버려진 찢겨진 비닐봉투에도 다른사람들은 알지 못할 그만의 <사연>이 담긴다. 누구에게는 낯선 타인의 공간도 그곳에 살아가는 사람들의 눈에는 색과 모양 하나하나에 이야기가 보이듯, 내가 지나온 그리고 익숙함 혹은 친숙함을 느끼는 공간들의 퍼즐조각과도 같은 풍경 드로잉을 보여준다.
