The Beauty of ‘The lives of others’ 난 그들의 삶을 훔쳤다, 영화 ‘타인의 삶’

The background of the German film “The lives of others” is the East German before the unification in 1984. In East Germany at the time, under the slogan of ‘Everything must be known’ all the East Germans were under surveillance by Stas (East German secret police). The film tells about the lives of Stasi Captain Wiesler, the playwright Dreyman and the lover of Dreyman actress Christa.

The lives of others looking through a microscope

Top class of Stasi, Wiesler gets instructions of superior authority to keep a close watch on the playwright Dreyman because he is suspected idea. He began to tap Dreyman and his lover Christa‘s apartment. Wiesler proceed systematically wiretapping and surveillance on Dreyman’s couple without error. There is no personal feelings.

He wiretaps the subject during 24 hours. As soon as he discovers the suspect against the system, he will put the screws on him. But it happens something unexpected to Wiesler while monitoring Dreyman and Christa’s daily life. Wiesler who was the perfect accessory of Communism system assimilate into the lives of others. Dreyman and Christa’s life observed through the Wiesler’s microscope is very fragile like a weak animal’s life that may be broken by greed of the powrful. The reChrista’s life powers of observation In fact, the real reason behind the surveillance is Minister of Culture Humpf covets actress Christa. Humpf is trying to eliminate Dreyman as a romantic rival.

Artists are beings who express emotion and inspiration through their own artistic tools and meet the public. It is why life and art of the artist in society dominated by surveillance and control of the powers is easy to be broken.

Sonata for a Good man

Wiesler who seems far from Poetry and Music fall in nd are also comfortably fall in the beauty of the poetry reading Brecht’s poems borrowed secretly from Dreyman’s apartment. He sheds a tear listening ‘Sonata for a good man’ played by Dreyman who solace the mind thinking his friend who has committed suicide.

True art has the property that disarming the closed minds of good man originally. Because Wiesler is a good person originally behind the cold-hearted face of secret police, he bears compassion for Dreyman and Christa. He protects them without looking at Dreyman and his friends dissident behavior. AndhHe says warm words for to console and inspire Christa who is tormented by intimidation of Minister of Culture Humpf. As like almighty good God life occasionally intervenes to our life, Wiesler intervenes to help Christa and Dreyman with his goodness.

After a few years in a unified Germany, Dreyman publish a new book called “Sonata for a good man”. Wiesler discovers Dreyman’s new book is dedicated “To HGW XX/7, with gratitude”. HGW XX/7 was his code name.

독일 영화 ‘타인의 삶’은 1984년 독일 통일 이전 동독이 배경이다. 당시 동독에서는 ‘모든 것을 알아야 한다’는 슬로건 아래 모든 동독인들이 슈타지(동독비밀경찰)의 감시를 받는다. 영화는 정보국 감시원이자 경찰대학 교수인 비즐러와 그의 감시 대상인 극작가 드라이만과 그의 연인인 여배우 크리스타의 삶에 대해 이야기한다.

현미경으로 바라보는 타인의 삶

동독 일급 비밀 경찰 비즐러는 극작가 드라이만의 사상이 의심되니 감시하라는 상부의 지시를 받는다. 그는 드라이만과 그의 연인 크리스타의 아파트를 도청하기 시작한다. 냉정한 감시자로서의 임무에 철저한 비즐러는 드라이만 감시 작전에서도 오차 없이 체계적으로 도청과 감시를 진행한다. 개인 감정이란 없다.

감시대상자의 24시간을 도청하여 체제에 반하는 의심되는 점을 발견하는 즉시 상대를 파고들 것이다. 그러나 비즐러는 드라이만과 크리스타의 일상을 감시하면서 예상치 못한 변화를 보인다. 체제의 완벽한 부속품이었던 그가 타인의 삶에 동화되어간다. 비즐러가 현미경으로 들여다보듯이 관찰한 극작가 드라이만과 배우 크리스타의 삶은 권력자의 탐욕으로 부서질 수도 있는 연약한 짐승 삶과 같았다. 사실 드라이만에 대한 감시는 크리스타를 탐하는 장관의 욕망에서 비롯된 것이기 때문이다.

예술가는 자신이 품은 감성과 영감을 자신만의 예술적 도구로 표현하고 대중과 만나는 존재들이다. 그러기에 감시와 통제가 지배하는 사회에서 예술가들의 삶과 예술은 권력자에 의해 부서지기 쉬울 수 밖에 없다.

선한 사람을 위한 소나타

시와 음악과는 거리가 먼 건조한 삶을 살아온듯한 비즐러는 드라이만의 아파트에 몰래 잠입해서 브레히트의 시집을 살짝 빌려 읽으면서 시의 아름다움에 푹 빠지기도 하고, 드라이만이 친구인 연극연출가 예스카의 자살 소식을 듣고 마음을 달래기 위해 피아노로 연주하는 ‘선한 사람을 위한 소나타’를 도청을 통해 들으며 눈물을 흘리기도 한다.

진정한 예술은 본성이 착한 사람의 닫혀있는 마음을 무장해제시키고 꼭꼭 숨어있는 본래의 선한 마음을 끄집어내는 속성이 있다. 냉혈한 비밀경찰 비즐러의 내면 저 깊은 곳에는 선한 감성이 자리하고 있었기에, 드라이만과 크리스타에 대한 인간적 연민을 품게 된다. 드라이만과 그 친구들의 반체제적인 행위와 모의를 보고하지 않으면서 이들을 보호하고, 크리스타가 장관의 협박 때문에 장관과의 만남을 억지로 지속하는 것을 안타까워하고 우연히 만난 크리스타에게 그녀는 훌륭한 배우이니 자신감을 가지라고 따뜻한 말을 전한다.

우리 삶을 내려다 보는 전지전능한 선한 신이 삶에 가끔씩 우리의 삶에 개입하여 선의의 장치를 놓아 좋은 방향으로 흐르도록 돕듯이 비즐러는 그의 선함으로 드라이만과 크리스타의 삶에 개입한다.

몇 년 후 통일된 독일에서 드라이만은 ‘선한 사람을 위한 소나타’라는 신간을 발표한다. 비즐러는 “감사의 마음을 담아 HGW XX/7에게 이 책을 바칩니다”라는 헌정의 글을 책 안에서 발견한다. HGW XX/7는 비즐러의 암호명이다.
