The biggest purpose of Today’s cosmetic and tattoo work is to improve and decorate our face and body in order to make oneself more attractive to others. It may seem like modern life culture but decorating one’s body for attracting a partner is one of our most basic instincts. CultureM Magazine exclusively reveals 3 pieces of arts and artist’s journal of Hong Il Wha the artist who resides in Paris, France.

“I have visited Marquises Island, Tahiti where Gauguin’s last atelier was and interviewed local people on their tattoo culture. The word “tattoo” is originated 5000 years ago from Tahitian word ‘Tataou’. Tattoo that is explained by these local folks was invented as sort of identity stamp to prove your identity and where you are from. This tattoo mark also included one’s family trees, whether you are single or not and other social status. So it really worked as identification stamped on your body permanently.”

“The other similar example is the Indian’s facial paint that we see in western movies. The face paint was one of ways to identify a group and explain the situation there were in. The purpose wasn’t to protect skin or decorating oneself to earn others affection like how it is these days. It was more to intimidate the opponent in the time of war than attracting someone.”

“For instance, in case of Cherokee Indians from North America; they paint their face in black, red and white colors before they enter the war, which would work as both identity of the tribe and lucky charm that helps win the war. Black means one’s determination of destroying the enemy and summons bad luck to the enemy, red means war and white means the absolute being that stands against death. On the other hand New Guinean men paint themselves in red to appear more attractive. The color red in Korea’s prime five colors has slightly different meaning from previous cultures as it means Yang energy that brings and protects new life. Thus it was often used for ritual purpose, as it was believed to chase away bad spirits.” – by Hong Il Hwa

오늘날의 화장과 타투는 본래의 모습에 인위적인 꾸밈을 더해 개인의 모습을 더욱 매력적으로 만들고자 하는 목적이 가장 클 것이다. 어찌 보면 이 또한 이성으로부터 관심을 끌기 위한 본능일지 모른다. 프랑스 파리를 중심으로 유럽에서 활동하는 홍일화 작가의 작품 세 점과 작가노트를 컬쳐엠매거진이 독점으로 공개한다.

“타히티에 고갱의 마지막 작업실이 있던 마르키즈(Marquises) 섬에 방문하여 그 곳의 토속민과 문신에 관련하여 인터뷰를 한 적이 있다. 타히티어의 ‘타타우(tataou)’에서 유래되었다고 전해지는 타투의 역사는 5 천 여 년을 거슬러 올라간다. 토속민이 설명하는 타투는 자기가 어느 지역 사람인지를 표시하는 일종의 신분을 증명하기 위해 신체에 표시된 그 마을의 몸 도장 같은 것이었다고 한다. 더 나아가 혼인상태와 가족관계까지 일일이 표시한다고 하니 영구적인 주민등록등본인 셈이다.”

“이와 비슷한 예로 서부영화에서 흔히 볼 수 있었던 인디언의 화장을 볼 수 있다. 이 또한 개인이나 집단의 특정한 상황을 전달하기 위한 하나의 매개체였던 셈이다. 오늘날의 피부보호나 상대방에게 좋은 인상을 심어주기 위한 아름다움을 위한 화장이 아니었다. 오히려 상대방에게 호의를 불러일으키기 보다는 위화감을 조성하여 상대가 겁을 먹도록 하는 수단으로 활용되었다.”

“북아메리카의 원조 민족인 체로키 인디언의 경우 싸움에 앞서 검정, 빨강, 흰색을 얼굴에 칠해 자신의 신분을 표시함과 동시에 적을 무찌를 수 있는 힘을 얻는다는 부적과도 같은 의미로 활용했다. 검정은 적을 죽이겠다는 암시와 함께 적의 불운을 의미하며, 빨강은 전쟁을, 흰색은 죽음에 대항하는 절대자를 의미한다는 것이다. 반면에 뉴우기니아의 남성들은 이성에게 매력적으로 보이기 위해 붉은색을 칠했다고 한다. 얼굴 화장과는 약간의 거리가 있지만 한국의 오방색에서의 적색은 양기가 왕성하여 생명을 낳고 지키는 힘으로 상징이 되며 주술적인 의미로 귀신을 쫓는데 주로 이용하였다.”

“이렇듯 인종과 부족간의 피부색깔, 얼굴형태 등의 유전자에 의한 다양성으로 볼 수도 있지만 인종의 사회 정체성에 기인한 그들만의 체험에 관한 역사에 그 차별성을 둘 것이다. 그렇듯 화장과 타투는 단순한 치장의 목적을 넘어 생존에 관련된 인간 본능과 그 궤를 같이 한다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.” – 홍일화

홍일화 작가는 한국 현대판화가 협회 회원이자 재불 소나무 작가 협회 회원이다. 2008년에는 정헌메세나 재유럽 청년작가상을 수상 등 다양한 대회에서 예술성을 인정받았으며 현재 파리와 서울을 중심으로 작품 활동 중이다.
