The simple odd eating habit of his

Director Bong Jun Ho is setting himself up for a new movie ‘Okja’. Since the exciting casting news that Jake Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton are joining the movie, there has been so much discussion about will the new movie be a character movie like ‘Mother’ or satire movie full of metaphors like ‘The host’

All of these discussions suddenly reminded me of the scene from the movie ‘The Host’ and the guy I dated once who had zero interests in food and cooking. His kitchen shelves were stacked with cans of sea snails that almost looked like Andy Warhol’s painting ‘Campbell’ He said he usually eat a bowl of rice and a can of sea snails (he did admit that he was exaggerating a bit.) as a meal. To be honest him eating a can of sea snails didn’t shock me but him mixing up the rice with the liquid from the can shocked me more than watching the YouTube video ‘British food taste test’.

Even if he was this lazy single man whose food philosophy was merely higher than ‘as long as my stomach can digest’, the diet he has had almost seemed like a punishment. I had to think of a careful excuse to convince myself for him as he is considered successful for his age and that he might have had to choose efficiency and convenience over pleasantry of food. That excuse still sounds like a pathetic attempt at how I tried to digest the situation…

In the movie ‘The Host’ ‘Kang Doo’ played by Song Gwang Ho was told not to eat anything before his follow up medical tests when he was in quarantine after being diagnosed ‘infected’. However he ended up eating sea snails right out of a can with his fingers, as he couldn’t bare the midnight hunger. The director Bong Jun Ho mentioned that the scene was supposed to remind the viewers of scene from the movie ‘Alien’ where the alien gorged out of human stomach.

The director indirectly admitted that the intention of the image of human eating alien like sea snail was to evoke such an eerie feeling. That explains the common perception that sea snails right out of can really doesn’t hold the integrity of ‘good flavor’ unless it was mixed up in a dish.

I finally asked him the question as I was cooking Kim chi fried rice for him with whatever was in the kitchen after I had to stop him from reaching for a sea snail can. Was it because he couldn’t be bothered or does he actually enjoy such an odd eating habit? He had totally unexpected answer.

His father was a big fan of mountain climbing but his mother couldn’t enjoy it since she was suffering from motion sickness, which meant the climbing was a family trip between his father, his brother and himself. The food his father always prepared for the trip was rice, instant noodle and a can of sea snails. The sea snails he had during that time has always been very delicious for him thus it is still the best side dish he could have. I had thought about the meaning of ‘home cooked meal’ as he was telling me the story. Everybody will say the ‘home cooked meal’ is the best food in the world.

The instant image of ‘home cooked meal’ usually consists of steamy soup, tasty side dishes, and white warm bowl of rice that waters our mouth. However, in reality, not every ‘home cooked meal’ is that delicious. I guarantee it. Despite the reality, the reason why we still yearn for ‘home cooked meal’ is because of the memory that comes with it rather than the actual flavor of it. It is the same reason why sometimes a song can be rearranged to better-sophisticated way but it can never beat the original song that holds so much memory.

I felt a bit embarrassed with the unexpected sentimental response, but I urged him to try to cook more often. Then one evening he stopped me from cooking with a suggestion that he would cook this time. He had to hand me the TV remote control when I was peeping in the kitchen with concern, then finally he called me in the kitchen. The dinner he had prepared with such an ambition was sea snail and instant noodle with spicy sauce.

If I can be strict about the food, it was quite blend. Sea snails takes away the saltiness so you must remember to use more red pepper paste than usual however there was no way of knowing that for him. It was still the best instant noodle with spicy sauce I have ever had because the special flavor that was added in the noodle was the memory.

Not long ago I got a phone call from him saying how his new neighborhood where we used to hang out at reminded him of me. The call didn’t last after a few uncomfortable silences and slightly awkward overly friendly ton of chatter. After the call I thought about his kitchen and the piles of sea snail cans that looked like Andy Warhol’s painting and also thought of couple of new recipes I can cook for him now. Memories are always more beautiful and sweeter but it doesn’t mean that you always want to go back to it. Just like me thinking of couple of new recipes for him didn’t mean that I missed him.

 

그 남자의 간편한 괴식

봉준호 감독이 신작 ‘옥자’를 준비 중 이라고 한다. 제이크 질렌할과 틸다 스윈튼 등 주요 배역 캐스팅 소식에 이어 이 신작이 봉감독의 전작들 중 ‘마더’를 닮은 캐릭터 영화인지 ‘괴물’처럼 은유로 가득 찬 현실 고발성 영화인지를 예측하는 의견이 활발히 오가고 있다.

이런 이야기들을 접하다 보니 문득 ‘괴물’의 한 장면과 함께 음식과 요리에 전혀 관심이 없었던 그가 떠올랐다.  그의 집 주방을 가득 채운 유동 골뱅이 캔들은 어찌나 늘 빼곡했던지 흡사 앤디 워홀의 작품 ‘캠벨’을 보는 듯 했다.  그의 주식은 그 골뱅이 캔 하나와 전자렌지에 데워먹는 인스턴트 밥이라고 했다.(일부 과장된 부분이 있다고 밝혀졌지만) 인터넷에서 접한 ‘영국 괴식’보다 더 충격적이었던 괴식을 목격한 것도 그가 골뱅이 캔에 담긴 국물에 밥을 비벼먹는 것을 봤을 때였다. 

제 아무리 게으른 독거남이자, ‘음식은 소화되면 그만’인 성향의 사람이라지만 그 식사는 거의 벌칙이 아니던가. 사회적으로 제 나이에 맞게 제법 성공한 그였기에, 내가 애써 생각해낸 그를 위한 변명은 ‘식사에 있어서도 예외 없는 효율성과 편의성 추구’랄까… 이렇게 쓰면서도 여전히 어이는 없다.

영화 ‘괴물’ 에서 ‘강두(송강호)’는 괴물 바이러스에 감염된 사람으로 분류되어 정밀 신체검사를 받기 전까지 금식하라는 명령을 받는다.  그렇지만 한밤 중 허기를 참지 못한 그는 병상에서 몰래 골뱅이 캔을 따 집어먹는다.  봉준호 감독은 후일 이 장면에 대해 ‘에일리언이 사람의 배를 뚫고 나왔던 장면을 연상하게 하려는 씬’이라고 설명한 바 있다. 감독 또한 ‘맨 골뱅이(괴물의 모습을 닮은)를 집어먹는 사람’의 이미지가 괴이한 정서를 자아내기 위해서라고 말한 것이나 다름없다.  요리된 골뱅이의 맛과는 별개로, 그만큼 ‘캔에서 바로 꺼낸 ‘생 골뱅이’라 함은 ‘식감’과는 거리가 먼 것임은 보편적인 인식이라는 것이다.

끼니 때가 되자 어김없이 골뱅이 캔을 따려는 그를 뜯어 말리고 있던 재료로 급히 김치볶음밥을 만들며 그에게 물었다.  도대체 그런 괴식을 즐기는 것인지, 아니면 귀찮아서 하는 수 없이 택하는 방편인지.  돌아온 그의 대답은 뜻밖이었다.

그의 아버지는 등산을 좋아하는 분이셨다. 하지만 멀미가 심한 어머니는 등산을 꺼리셨고, 때문에 그의 가족 산행은 늘 아버지 그리고 아들 형제들끼리였다. 아버지가 산행에 준비해 간 음식은 늘 쌀, 라면, 골뱅이 뿐이었는데 그 때 먹었던 골뱅이는 늘 맛있었다던 그였다. 그래서 그에게는 지금도 ‘캔 골뱅이’는 맛있는 반찬이 될 수 있다는 거였다.  나는 그 이야기를 듣고 ‘집밥’의 의미에 대해 생각해 보았다. 모든 사람은 ‘집밥이 최고’라고 입을 모아 말한다. 

어렴풋이 떠올린 ‘집밥’이라 함은 김이 폴폴 나는 찌개와 감칠맛 나는 밑반찬들, 새 하얀 흰 쌀밥 등으로 단촐하지만 군침 돌게 차려진 밥상이다.  그러나 현실 속에서는 단언컨대 모든 ‘집밥’이 맛있지는 않다. 그럼에도 모두가 ‘집밥’을 찾는 이유는 결국 그 맛보다는 어린 시절에 대한 그리움이 주 원인 아닐까. 제 아무리 세련되게 편곡되었어도 ‘원곡’을 따라갈 수 없는 것은 그 ‘원곡’이 가진 자신만의 추억 때문인 것처럼 말이다.

예상 외의 짠한(?) 답변에 머쓱해졌지만, 그래도 되도록이면 뭔가를 조리해서 먹어보라고 말했다. 어느 날 저녁을 차리려던 나를 말리며 오늘 식사는 자기가 맡겠다며 그가 나섰다. 걱정스런 마음에 주방을 기웃거리던 내게 리모컨을 쥐어주며 멀리 가있으라던 그는 몇 분 뒤 들뜬 목소리로 나를 불렀다. 야심차게 그가 준비한 식사는 골뱅이로 버무려진 인스턴트 비빔면이었다.  맛 자체를 냉정히 평가하자면, 싱거웠다. 골뱅이가 들어가면 간이 싱거워지기 때문에 고추장을 더 넣었어야 하지만 그가 그런 걸 알 리가 없다. 그러나 그 비빔면은 내가 먹어 본 인스턴트 비빔면 중 최고였던 걸로 기억된다. 그 비빔면에만 가미 되어 있는 간은 바로 추억이기 때문이다.

얼마 전, 이사한 동네가 나와 자주 놀던 동네라 안부가 궁금해서 연락했다는 그의 전화를 받았다. 어색함 때문에 과장된 반가운 톤과 주고 받을 이야기가 딱히 없어 흐르던 몇 번의 정적 뒤 전화를 끊었고, 나는 잠시 그의 주방의 앤디 워홀의 작품 같던 골뱅이캔 더미를 떠올렸다. 그리고 지금이라면 그 골뱅이로 이런 걸 해줬을텐데 하며 몇 가지 레시피도 떠올렸다.  추억은 언제나 아름답고 감미롭다. 그렇다고 해서 모든 추억이 반드시 되돌리고 싶은 시간만은 아니다. 내가 몇 가지 레시피를 떠올린 것이 반드시 그가 그리운 것이 아니었던 것처럼.
