A Korean jazz musician Jin Kim isn’t the jazz musician eager to jump on the bandwagon. Although he changed his major to trumpet when he fell for the instrument soon after he played it by chance, he has a certain philosophy as the jazz musician. Hard bop, that is the only one story of him.
If you are rock music fan then you have heard the word ‘hard rock’ at least once. Hard rock is the quintessence of rock music basically. You can’t talk about rock music without hard rock even though there are rock hip-hop, rap-rock music and many other hybrids these days. So as hard rock is the essence of rock music, hard bop is the essence of bop music or bebop.

재즈 뮤지션 진킴은 시류에 편승하는 음악을 하지 않는다. 버클리 음대 재학 시설, 우연치 않게 손에 쥔 트렘펫이 전공을 바꿀 만큼 트렘펫에 미친 듯이 매료되었지만 한 가지 분명하고 명확한 철학이 있었다.
낭만적이고 로맨틱하고 서정적인 멜로디 보다는 정통적인 재즈의 힘을 들려주고 싶은 것.  반주자가 아닌 연주자의 음악으로서 재즈를 만끽할 수 있게 하는 것. 그래서 진킴은 재즈 중에서도 극악의 난이도를 지니고, 그 자체가 음악이 되는 하드밥을 국내 재즈팬들에게 들려줘야 한다는 것이다.
솔로 재즈 뮤지션이자 5인조 재즈 밴드 ‘Jin Kim The Jazz Unit’의 리더로 대한민국 재즈 음악 팬들을 위해 오늘도 변함없이 하드 밥을 연주하는 이 남자. 컬쳐엠매거진이 하드 밥 재즈 뮤지션 진 킴을 만났다.
