The imperishable assignment, ‘Woman’s beauty 영원불멸한 이야기, ‘여성의 미’

To an artist, development means change. It doesn’t mean that I would criticize an artist for maintaining or being loyal to one’s distinctive style or the world one has developed after long research and experiments. That is something we all admire, however I am not quite confident that I can continue same style of work for a few decades.

I can divide the people who come to see my work into 2 types. The ones that like the changes in my work, then others that say they are not sure if my works were done by the same artist. I had spent a lot of time contemplating on how I should develop my artwork and the direction of my art world while I was studying at an ecole des Beaux-Arts in France and discussed it with my professors extensively. The answer was quite blunt. An artist shouldn’t diversify his work over too many topics. It is somewhat similar understanding to writing a thesis.

Once you have chosen the topic of your thesis, you must go at the topic till the end. You maybe able to move on to another topic afterwards, however if you work on many thesis on many different topics, not only is it too much for one person, but also the work won’t have its depth and characteristics. There is a clear rule that the artist should define his work that speaks of the artist then his path will be less confusing for both artist and viewers.

After a long and heartfelt consideration, my conclusion on my topic came down to the diversity of woman’s beauty. I like the fact that the standards of woman’s beauty are different by era, country, and each individual. There isn’t strict standard of it. Above everything, the word ‘woman’ interests me and somehow I like the uncertainty of ever finding an answer after the lifetime research into it. I believe that the most important thing is I should be able to maintain my interest and enjoy what I do in order to continue my work. This is what I tell my junior artists as well.

I started writing my thesis on woman’s beauty. There is neither answer nor conclusion, however I believe there isn’t a topic that can be more interesting and full of inspirations for me. This research has taken its turn towards understanding woman now and I must agree that women and men are in fact from different planets.

I enjoy discussing with other people over my painting that reflects my opinions on how different we are and how there isn’t a definitive answer to woman’s beauty. Instead of talking about simply whether the painting is good or not, I would rather talk about right or wrong on the topic and deduct the conclusion by exchanging different ideas through my paintings.

작가에게 발전은 변화라 생각한다. 물론 수많은 연구 끝에 명확한 한가지 스타일이나 독특한 세계가 만들어져서 그것을 평생 고집하는 것에 대해서 불만을 가지는 것은 아니다. 어찌보면 그런 면이 부러울 때도 있지만 한가지 스타일만을 몇 십 년 아니 평생을 해나갈 자신은 없다.

내 작품을 접하는 이들의 반응은 크게 둘로 나뉜다. 다양한 변화가 좋다는 부류와 한 작가의 작품인지 모르겠다는 부류이다. 프랑스 보쟈르를 다니면서 앞으로 펼쳐나가야 할 나의 작품세계에 대해 수많은 고민을 했고 이에 관해 교수님들과 많은 대화를 나누었다. 하지만 그 대답은 정해져 있었다. 한 작가가 여러 주제를 가지고 다양한 작업을 하면 안 된다는 것이다.

이는 논문을 쓰는 것이랑 동일하다. 하나의 논문 주제가 정해지면 그 논문이 끝날 때까지는 그에만 매진해야 한다는 논리다. 물론 하나의 논문이 끝나고 나면 다른 주제의 논문을 써나갈 수 있지만 동시에 너무나도 다양한 논문을 써나간다는 일은 한 사람이 하기에 어려울뿐더러 그 깊이감과 존재감을 잃어버리기 싶기 때문이다. 이 작가는 이런 주제다라는 상징관계가 성립이 되야만 작가생활을 원만히 할 수 있으며 타인들에게 혼동을 주면 안 된다는 규칙 또한 존재한다.

이런저런 고민 끝에 내린 결론은 다양성을 존재로 한 여성의 미다. 여성의 미의 기준은 시대별로 나라별로 그리고 개인별로 다르며 그 정해진 기준이 없다는 점이 좋았기 때문이다. 무엇보다 여성이라는 단어에 많은 흥미를 느꼈고 평생 연구를 한다고 답을 얻어낼 수 있을 거라는 자신도 없었다. 무엇보다 내가 실증을 느끼면 않되고 스스로가 재미가 있어야 계속해서 작업을 할 수 있다고 믿었다. 이 말은 내가 후배들에게 자주하는 말이다.

나는 여성의 미에 대한 논문을 쓰기 시작했다. 답도 없고 결론도 내릴 수 없지만 이처럼 흥미롭고 무궁무진한 소재 또한 없다고 생각한다. 그리고 어느덧 이런 탐구생활은 여성에 대한 이해로 점점 다가오고 있다. 물론 여성과 남성은 서로 다른 별에서 온 사람이라는 점에 대해 깊이 찬성하는 바이다. 서로 다르다는 면과 정해진 답이 없다는 면에서 내가 생각하고 그려놓은 그림을 보고 타인들과 대화를 나누기가 참으로 좋다. 그림이 좋고 나쁨을 떠나 공통의 주제로 옳고 그름을 따지며 무언가 있을 법한 결론을 추리해 나가는 게 좋고 그림들로 인해 소통하는 것이 더 좋다.
