Curiosity is the engine of artwork

Curiosity is the engine of my artwork. When people say my painting of an old lady putting on makeup look quite scary. It is not because my painting exaggerated the old lady but somehow people feel quite differently about an old lady doing the exact same thing as a young woman does.

When an old lady gets plastic surgery, people look at it very negatively and start pouring out their judgmental opinions. When an old lady dresses glamorously and puts on colorful make up, people shake their heads in disapproval. The reaction for young people is quite the contrast. Why is expressing one’s character and taste in fashion so forbidden simply because you are not as young?

I have about 10 paintings of old lady and I deeply wonder why the painting of an old lady which should be considered benevolent is taken rather scary by many audience. Do we genuinely feel threatened by this old lady? I surely don’t think so. Old ladies are usually very motherly, gracefully generous and loving. 

However a lot of people say it is scary to see an old lady with colorful makeup on. Then when it comes to a young woman doing the same thing, we chose adjectives like ‘unique’ ‘fun’ or ‘pretty’. So my curiosity in why people feel so differently about an old lady with makeup really fuels my next artwork to present to people in order to open a conversation.

Decorating an old lady creates some sort of visual tension. When we were young, older people used to say ‘if you don’t behave, a drunk old grandpa will take you away!” There used to be a scary story called ‘Ghost of an old lady in Hong Kong’ in the 90s. An old lady who loves her cat so much that one day she took her beloved cat on a trip to Hong Kong then she got into a horrific accident which changed her face half cat and half human (like the villain Baron Ashura in Mazinga Z) This was one of the scariest one of the horror story series.

Perhaps the images that are manifested from such a simple story about horrific situations convince us to be afraid of certain things subconsciously. Then what about the people who grew up with scary stories that doesn’t involve old lady or old men? These endless thoughts become an inspiration of my artwork. The elements that stimulate my curiosity are in every corner of our daily life. Once I develop new curiosity, I am more motivated to paint something more interesting.

호기심이 내 작업의 원동력이다. 할머니가 화장한 그림을 그리면 무섭다고 한다. 물론 과장되게 표현한 부분들도 있지만 젊은 여성의 얼굴에 과장되게 표현한 것과도 사뭇 그 결과물은 다르게 돌아온다. 할머니가 성형을 하면 이상한 시선으로 부정적 의견들을 털어 놓는다. 할머니가 좀 화려하게 옷을 입거나 화장을 하면 쯧쯧 혀를 찬다. 젊은 사람들에 대한 반응과는 사뭇 다르다. 젊지 않다는 이유만으로 개성을, 멋을 그리고 취향을 표현하면 왜 안 되는 것인가?

할머니를 그린 그림들이 10점 정도된다. 그런데 왜 인자하게 느껴져야할 할머니의 모습을 무섭다고 관람객들이 느끼는 지에 대해 많은 의문점을 갖게 된다. 우리가 할머니를 통해 실제로 위험을 느껴서 그런 것일까? 그건 아닌 것 같다. 일반적으로 할머니는 자상하고 온화하며 부드러운 신 분들이다.

할머니의 초상에 색조화장을 하거나 화려한 치장을 할 때 더 무섭다고하는 이들이 많이 있다. 똑같은 방식으로 젊은 여자에게 지나친 화장이나 과도한 치장을 한 경우는 무섭다보다는 독특하다, 재밌다, 혹은 예쁘다라는 수식어가 동반된다. 그런데 왜 할머니에게 이런 치장이나 화장은 안 된다 아니 무섭다고 얘기를 하는 걸까에 대한 궁금증과 호기심이 생겨난다. 호기심이 생길 경우 이를 그림으로 표현해 제3자에게 보여줌으로 대화의 문을 연다.

할머니에 대한 장식은 왠지 모를 시각적 긴장감을 만든다. 어려선 말 안 들으면 망태 할아버지가 잡아간다. 1990년대에는 고양이를 좋아하는 할머니가 고양이를 데리고 홍콩으로 비행기를 타고 가는 도중 사고가 나서 반은 고양이 얼굴 반은 할머니 얼굴로 되었다고 하면서(마치 마징가 제트의 아수라 백작처럼) 시작하는 홍콩할매 귀신 이야기는 당시 가장 무서운 이야기 시리즈였다.

하지만 단순히 이야기 속 끔찍한 상황들이 종합되어 연상되는 상상의 설득이 우리를 공포에 밀어 넣었던 것들이 계속 잠재의식 속에 남아있어서 그런 것일까? 그렇다면 한 번도 할머니나 할아버지에 대한 무서운 이야기를 들어보지 못한 사람들은 그림을 보고 무서워하지 않을까? 이런 수많은 생각들이 작업의 진행에 새로운 발상으로 자극해 온다. 일상 속에는 무궁무진한 호기심을 유발하는 요소들이 곳곳에 존재한다. 그리고 나는 이런 호기심을 찾아낼 때 좀 더 재미있는 그림 이야기를 그려나갈 수 있는 동기가 된다.
