Finding Vincent van Gogh in Auvers-Sur-Oise 빈센트 반 고흐를 찾아서

Auvers-sur-Oise is a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France. It is associated with several famous artists, the most prominent being Vincent van Gogh. During the 19th century, a number of painters lived and worked in Auvers-sur-Oise, including Paul Cézanne, Charles-François Daubigny, Camille Pissarro, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Vincent van Gogh.

In fact, Dr. Paul Gachet lived in Auvers-sur-Oise. He was acquainted with the avant-garde artists of the time. Through this connection, Vincent van Gogh moved to Auvers to be treated by him, though he considered the doctor to be in a worse state than himself. Van Gogh died by a gunshot to the chest. The room on the upper floor of the Auberge Ravoux where he died has been preserved, although no furniture remains. Auvers-sur-Oise is the final resting place of both Vincent and his brother Theo van Gogh, who died six months later.

오베르 쉬르 우아즈는 프랑스의 북중부에 있는 작고 고즈넉한 마을로 빈센트 반 고흐를 비롯해 폴 세잔과 샤를 프랑수아 도비니, 카미유 피사로 같은 대가들이 예술 활동을 한 곳으로 유명하다. 특히 빈센트 반 고흐는 그의 열렬한 후원자이자 주치의였던 폴 가쉐 박사를 따라 이 마을로 이주해 그의 걸작 대부분을 이 곳에서 완성했다. 1890년 7월, 빈센트 반 고흐는 권총 자살로 생을 마감했고 당시 그가 사용하던 방이 오늘날까지 보존되어 관광명소로도 각광받고 있다. 현재 오베르 쉬르 우아즈에는 빈센트 반 고흐와 그의 동생 테오 반 고흐가 나란히 묻혀있다.

 

‘Longing for concision and grace’, Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work had far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His paintings include portraits, self portraits, landscapes, still lifes, olive trees and cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. He suffered from anxiety and increasingly frequent bouts of mental illness throughout his life, and died at the age of 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was largely ignored by critics until after his early death in 1890. The widespread and popular realisation of his significance in the history of modern art did not begin until his adoption by the Fauves and German Expressionists in the mid-1910s.

‘시대를 앞서 나간 상처 입은 영혼’, 빈센트 반 고흐

서양 미술사상 가장 위대한 화가로 꼽히는 거장, 빈센트 반 고흐. 사실 인상파, 야수파, 초기 추상화에 미친 반 고흐의 영향이 막대해 20세기 예술을 여러 관점에서 볼 수 있는 초석을 마련했다고 할 수 있을 정도이다. 그는 그의 작품 전부를 정신질환을 앓고 자살을 감행하기 전의 단지 10년 동안에 모두 만들어냈다. 그는 생존기간 동안 거의 성공을 거두지 못했지만, 그가 죽은 지 11년이 지난 1901년 3월 17일, 파리에서 71점의 반 고흐의 그림을 전시한 이후 그의 사후 명성은 급속도로 커졌다.
