The ever-lasting soul of Australian wine, Barossa Valley part 1

Bordeaux of France, Piedmont of Italy and Rioja of Spain, these are the wine producing region that represents each country, and when you think of Australia, wine enthusiasts name ‘Barossa’ without hesitation. If you ever travel Australia, Barossa Valley has to be the number 1 on your destination list. Barossa is located about 60 km away from Adelaide.

You can go there by express bus or train, however I had learned that there is nothing better than renting a car for a winery tour. The lesson was taught when we had such a hard time visiting wineries by public transportation in the vast land of Australia. So we had started renting a car from our trip to Barossa. Not only was it our first time driving abroad but also I had to drive on the opposite side of the road from Korea, so you can imagine how nerve wrecking that was for us.

Let me tell you something. You will be surprised by how often you find dead kangaroos on highways, mostly killed by car accidents. That is the ambush you have to watch out for when driving in Australia. Even the insurance for a rent car doesn’t cover the damages done by kangaroos, which means you will have to pay for the damage yourself if you are hit by a kangaroo. When you are thinking about driving in Australia, you really ought to look out for wild animals jumping in on the road.

Anyhow Barossa has 3 main cities Tanunda, Angaston, and Nuriootpa. Instead of staying in one of the 3 main cities, we chose to stay in a small town called Lyndoch. We liked the place not only because we found a cheap accommodation there through Airbnb but also because most of the wineries are a short drive away from the town. Lyndoch itself really has nothing to look around for other than visiting wineries around it. So if you are thinking of doing winery tour in Barossa, Lyndoch that is surrounded by all the wineries, should be your destination for an accommodation.

Now that I finished all the little stories, I can start listing all the wineries you must visit in Barossa Valley.

Schild Estate

It is walking distance away from Lyndoch. You can find their wine in Korea and it is quite famous among wine lovers. Shield Estate was established in 1952 by a married couple Ben and Alma. After Ben’s sudden passing in 1956, their only son and the youngest of 8 siblings, Ed was put in charge. He was only 16 at the time. I guess none of his 7 sisters wanted to succeed the winery.

Ultimately Shield Estate was developed with Ed’s passion for wine alone. The source of Shield Estate’s pride comes from the 165-year-old grape vine. 165 years old means they have one of the oldest grape vines in the world. The grape type is Shiraz and their Shiraz wine is called Moorooroo, which is famous not only in Australia but also worldwide.

If you must know, old grape vine’s roots can grow up to 10 meters long deep into the earth, which makes it resilient to flood and drought, able to absorb nutrients very well but allow only a few grapes to grow that helps lowering retention rate and results into growing high sugar concentrated grapes. That is why wine made of grapes from old vines is rare and expensive. Their efforts in making a great wine are as great as vine’s age thus why the vineyard has such high reputation. We recommend this winery to wine enthusiast who is looking for deep dark but sophisticated wine.

 

호주 와인의 영원한 소울, 바로사 밸리 – 첫 번째 이야기 

프랑스에 보르도, 이탈리아에 피에몬테, 스페인의 리오하를 최고의 와인 산지로 꼽는 것처럼 호주에서는 고민할 필요 없이 ‘바로사’를 최고의 와인 산지로 거론한다. 호주 와인 여행을 떠난다면 버킷리스트 1위에 꼽힐만한 곳이다. 바로사는 애들레이드 시티에서 약 60km 정도 떨어진 곳이다. 고속버스나 기차로 갈 수도 있지만 와이너리 투어에는 역시 렌터카가 최고. 우리 부부도 광활한 호주의 와이너리를 대중교통으로 다니기가 너무 힘들다는 것을 알아버린 후, 바로사부터는 렌터카로 움직였다. 해외에서의 첫 운전이고 또 주행 방향이 한국과 반대라서 엄청 긴장했던 것이 기억이 난다.

여담이지만 정말 신기했던 것은 호주 도로에 치여 죽은 캥거루 시체가 엄청 많더라는 것. 호주 운전의 복병은 바로 캥거루였다. 렌터카 계약 조건에도 풀-카버리지를 하더라도, 캥거루를 친 것에 대해서는 보험이 적용이 안 된다고 했다. 즉, 치면 내 돈으로 다 수리해야한다는 것. 만약 호주에서 차를 운전할 생각이라면 갑자기 도로로 뛰어드는 야생동물들을 정말 조심해야 한다. 

여하튼 바로사에는 타눈다 Tanunda, 안개스톤 Angaston, 누리웃파 Nuriootpa라는 주요 도시가 있는데, 우리 부부는 세 곳 말고 린독 Lyndoch이라는 작은 마을에서 머물렀다. 이유는 이곳에 마음에 드는 에어비앤비 하우스가 있어서 머문 것도 있고, 차로 조금만 가면 바로사의 유명 와이너리들이 줄을 잇기 때문. 린독은 마을 자체로는 아무것도 볼 것 없는 곳이라, 와이너리 탐방이 목적이 아니면 올 곳이 못된다. 하지만 바로사 와이너리 투어의 중심부에 있기 때문에 목적이 와인 탐방이라면 더할 나위가 없는 장소.

자, 그럼 바로사에 오면 꼭 들려봐야 할 와이너리들에 대해서 썰을 풀어보겠다.

쉴드 에스테이트 

린독에 숙소를 잡았다면 걸어서 방문할 수 있는 와이너리. 한국에도 수입이 되고, 애호가들 사이에서도 꽤 유명한 곳이다. 쉴드 에스테이트는 1952년에 벤 Ben, 알마 Alma 쉴드라는 부부가 설립한 와이너리다. 1956년에 벤이 갑자기 사망하고, 그들 사이의 8명의 자식 중에서 막내이자 단 하나의 아들이 와이너리를 책임지게 되었다.
이름은 에드 Ed. 그는 그때 나이가 겨우 16살이었다고. 7명의 누나들은 와이너리를 이어서 하고 싶지 않았나 보다. 사실 그것도 그럴 것이 ‘와이너리’하면 뭔가 럭셔리해보이지만, 실상은 전혀 그렇지 않다. 그냥 작물 키우고 포도 따고 포도주 만들고. 그냥 농부와 다를 바 없다. 와이너리에서 단 하루 일해봤는데, 정말 입에서 단내가 날 정도로 힘들었다.

결국 쉴드 에스테이트는 에드의 열정 하나로 만들어진 것이나 다름없다. 쉴드 에스테이트의 자랑거리는 무려 올해로 165년의 나이를 먹은 포도밭을 가지고 있다는 것. 165년이면 세계에서 가장 오래된 포도나무 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 품종은 쉬라즈. 여기서 만든 쉬라즈 와인을 ‘무루루 Moorooroo’라고 부른다. 

참고로 오래된 포도나무는 뿌리가 수 미터 혹은 10m 이상 깊이 내려가서 홍수와 가뭄에 견디기가 쉽고 영양분도 많이 빨아들이며, 포도송이도 많이 열리지 않아서 수율도 자연히 낮아지고, 집중력이 있는 포도알을 영근다. 그래서 보통 오래된 포도나무의 포도로 만든 와인은 비싸고 귀하다. 노력을 게을리 하지 않기에, 이곳의 와인은 늘 품질이 좋기로 유명하다. 섬세하면서 농밀한 와인을 찾는 이들에게 자신 있게 추천하고 싶은 곳.
