Maya’s land where embodies the Caribbean sea, Tulum

Tulum is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Cobá. The ruins are situated on 12-meters tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned. One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.

Tulum ruins are the third most-visited archaeological site in Mexico, after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza. It is popular for the picturesque view of the Caribbean and a location just 128 km south of the popular beach resort of Cancún. The tourist destination is now divided into four main areas: the archaeological site, the pueblo(or town), the zona hotelera(or hotel zone) and the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka’an.

카리브해를 품은 마야의 땅, 툴룸

툴룸은 멕시코 유카탄 반도 동쪽의 카리브 해안가 절벽에 있는 유적지로 아름다운 해안가와 마야 문명을 동시에 느낄 수 있는 중남미 최고의 관광지로 사랑 받고 있다. 카리브해의 아름다움을 가장 잘 담고 있는 몇 안 되는 해변으로 꼽히는 툴룸은 멕시코 정부가 보하는 지역이기 때문에 오롯이 자연을 즐기며 휴식을 취할 수 있는 곳이기도 하다.

또한 해변 옆 바위 절벽에 있는 마야 유적지는 툴룸을 찾는 수 많은 관광객들의 이목을 끌고 있는데 당시 이 곳에서는 해상 교역 및 활발한 경제활동을 이루어졌다고 한다. 현재 남아있는 툴룸의 마야 유적지는 세 개의 주요 건축물로 구성되어 있으며, 가장 웅대한 건축물은 7.5m 높이의 ‘엘 카스티요(El Castillo)’이다. 또한 신들의 조각상이 모셔진 갤러리가 있고 태양의 움직임을 관측하는 기능을 가진 ‘프레스코 신전(Temple of the frescos)’과 제를 모시는 ‘강림신의 신전(Temple of Descending God)’이 있다. 또한 바닷가 언덕에 ‘바람신 신전(God of Winds Temple)’이 세워져 있다.
