The mecca of Southern Australia Riesling wine, Clare Valley

If you must pick a region for famous white wine winery in southern Australia, it will be ‘Clare Valley. This is a place mostly known for its Riesling grapes. As McLaren Vale which I have introduced in the past is known for Shiraz trail, Clare Valley has its Riesling trail. I travelled Clare Valley with a rent car so I didn’t really experience the trail but if you have time, try the trail with a bicycle for a unique experience. Especially if you are a white wine lover, more specifically a Riesling wine lover then more the reason you must try.

As you can guess from the information that the valley produces white wine grapes, Clare Valley is chillier and rains more than Barossa. Even its red wine is famous for its delicate and elegant style. Personally I had more impressive experience from the trip to Clare Valley than Barossa. Their wineries are more idyllic and affectionate. But don’t take my word for it as you might have different standards.

Pikes Wines
The staff at Torbreck, Barossa has strongly recommended this winery saying it is a must-visit place. We had very high expectation since the recommendation was from a staff that was working at Torbrek, one of the best wineries in the country.

Not only the wine but also the winery is located in a place that looks like right out of beautiful painting of peaceful little village. The name ‘Pikes’ came from the family who established the winery. Henry Pike moved from Adelaide in 1878 and started Pikes Dorset Brewery that produced and sold beer, soft drinks and other beverages and its label with a big fish on was designed then. The reason behind the label is because Henry Pike loved lure fishing in a river.

Then in 1972, the beer company was sold and Edgar the son of Henry who was studying wine and his wife established Pikes Wines in 1984 continuing his father’s business with the birth of the winery that is ran within family. Generations have been brewing wine.

Pikes is famous for Riesling wine, but their red wine’s quality isn’t something to ignore. The range begins from Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre, Sangiovese, and Grenache to Tempranillo. The winery produces fine wine by selecting grapes that adapted Clare Valley’s climate regardless of its origin. The place deserves a visit, as it is the compass where you can see the past and future of Clare Valley.

Paulett Wines
Interestingly we visited Paulett Wines because it was recommended by Pikes Winery. Apparently it has the best view in Clare Valley. The view wasn’t what it was sold for but the open view to vast Clare valley was something to look for.

Paulett winery is also famous for Riesling wine. It has been producing fine Riesling wine for more than 30 years since its establishment in 1983. The first thing you will see when you enter the winery is the winner’s sign that says that was held in Canberra. I was a bit skeptical about how their wine was chosen as the best Riesling wine but the evidence was there so I budged. The wine that won the challenge is the 2005 vintage Riesling wine and as the experience suggest, wine is so much better when it is more matured than while it is young.

Also Paulett has won the 5 stars of James Holliday, the evaluation measurement used for Australian wine. By then all the doubts I had became pointless. Each wine country has its own one or two famous wine critics and the most famous wine critic uncle in Australia is James Holliday. As prestigious wine critic himself, his one comment is considered the bible among wineries. A winery that won 5 stars from him will be the standard of premium Australian wine. It is also the index for a customer to choose a good wine. So you are not loosing anything by visiting this winery that has won 5 stars from James Holliday.

 

남호주 리슬링 와인의 메카, 클레어 밸리

남호주에서 화이트 와인으로 명산지 한 곳을 꼽으라면 ‘클레어 밸리 Clare Valley’다. 이곳은 다른 어떤 품종보다 리슬링 Riesling이라는 품종으로 유명하다. 이 전에 소개했던 맥라렌 베일 McLaren Vale에 쉬라즈 트레일 Shiraz Trail이 있다면 클레어 밸리에는 리슬링 트레일이 있다. 필자는 클레어 밸리를 렌터카로 다녔기 때문에 이 트레일을 경험해 보지 않았지만, 시간 여유가 있는 이들은 이 리슬링 트레일을 따라 자전거를 타보는 것도 색다른 여행이 될 수 있다. 특히 화이트 와인, 그 중에서도 리슬링을 좋아하는 이라면 더더욱 더.

화이트 품종이 많이 재배된다는 데에서 짐작할 수 있겠지만, 클레어 밸리는 바로사보다 서늘하고 강수량이 많은 편이다. 레드 와인조차도 섬세하고 우아한 스타일을 자랑하는 곳이다. 개인적으로는 바로사보다 클레어 밸리에서 와이너리 여행을 했을 때가 더 기억에 남는다. 와이너리들도 더 전원적이고 정감이 갔었다. 물론 개인차가 있겠지만.

파이크스 와인즈 Pikes Wines
바로사의 토브렉을 방문했을 때 와이너리를 안내해 준 직원이 반드시 방문해야 할 와이너리라고 강력하게 추천해 준 곳. 호주 최고의 와인 중 하나로 꼽히는 토브렉에서 일하는 직원이 추천한 곳이라서 굉장히 기대가 컸다.

와인도 와인이지만 파이크스 와인즈는 클레어 밸리의 한적한 시골 한가운데에 그림처럼 자리 잡은 아름다운 곳이다. ‘파이크스’라는 이름은 이 와이너리를 설립한 가문의 이름이다. 헨리 파이크 Henry Pike라는 사람이 1878년 애들레이드 근처로 이주해서 맥주, 소프트드링크 등의 음료를 만들어서 판 파이크스 도어셋 브루어리 Pikes Dorset Brewery가 파잌스 와인즈의 전신. 파잌스 와인의 레이블에 보면 커다란 물고기 그림이 그려져 있는데, 이미 이때부터 맥주나 음료 레이블에 지금처럼 물고기 그림을 그려 넣었었다. 그 이유는 헨리 파이크가 강에서 즐기는 루어 낚시를 광적으로 좋아했기 때문이라고.

그러다 맥주 회사가 1972년 다른 곳에 팔렸고, 와인 공부를 하던 헨리의 아들인 에드가와 그의 아내가 1984년 아버지의 뒤를 이어 지금의 파잌스 와인을 설립하고 가족경영으로 운영되는 파잌스 와인즈가 탄생했다. 가문 대대로 술을 만들어 온 셈이다.

파이크스는 물론 리슬링으로 만든 와인이 가장 유명하지만, 레드 와인들도 퀄리티가 좋은 편이다. 품종도 쉬라즈는 물론, 말벡, 까베르네 소비뇽, 무르베드르, 산지오베제, 그르나슈, 뗌쁘라니요까지. 국가를 가리지 않고 클레어 밸리에 잘 적응하는 포도 품종들을 선별해서 와인을 만들고 있다. 클레어 밸리 와인의 현재와 미래를 느낄 수 있는 기라성 같은 곳이니 방문할 가치가 있다.

폴렛 와인즈 Paulett Wines
재밌게도 폴렛 와인즈는 파잌스 와인즈에서 추천을 해서 찾아갔던 와이너리다. 클레어 밸리에서 전망이 가장 좋은 곳이라고 했다. 실제로 가서 보니, 극찬할 정도는 아니지만, 탁 트인 전망이 시원하긴 했다.

폴렛 와인즈도 리슬링 와인으로 유명하다. 1983년에 설립이 되서 30년이 넘는 세월 동안 꾸준히 좋은 리슬링 와인을 만들어오고 있다. 호주 캔버라에서 열린 에서 세계 최고의 리슬링으로 꼽혔다는 문구를 셀러 도어에 들어가자마자 바로 볼 수 있다. 세계 최고의 리슬링으로 꼽혔다는 게 살짝 수상쩍긴 하지만, 엄연히 증거가 있기 때문에 믿는 수밖에. 이때 수상한 와인인 2005년 빈티지의 숙성된 리슬링인데, 역시 리슬링은 어릴 때보다 어느 정도 숙성을 시킨 것이 일품이다.

그리고 폴렛은 프리미엄 호주 와인을 구분할 때 자주 등장하는 제임스 할러데이 James Halliday가 별 다섯 개를 수여한 와이너리다. 이쯤 되면 이 와이너리의 와인 퀄리티에 대해서 의심할 필요는 없어진다. 세계의 와인 생산국마다 유명한 와인 평론가들이 한두 명쯤은 있는데, 호주에서 가장 유명한 아저씨가 바로 제임스 할러데이. 저명한 평론가인 만큼 그의 말 한마디 한마디가 호주 와인 업계에서는 중요한 코멘트가 될 수밖에 없다. 특히 그가 별 다섯 개를 준 와이너리는 호주 프리미엄 와인의 기준점이 된다고 할 수 있다. 소비자들에게 좋은 와인을 구매하는 기준이 되기도 하고. 그런 그가 별 다섯 개를 준 와이너리인 만큼 들러서 손해는 안 볼 와이너리다.
