The mecca of Southern Australia Riesling wine, Clare Valley – part 2

Taylors
The winery has benchmarked the old style French Chateau that disappointed us with a pathetic look that resembled Lego Sets. They even put ‘Chateau’ on their cellar door. It almost feels like they are blindly luring people in with a fancy French word ‘Chateau’ that deceives the image of premium wine.

Taylors family that originally started a wine business in Sidney had hoped that they could produce high quality wine such as the world famous Chateau Mouton Rothschild from Medoc, Bordeaux. Basically he had quiet an ambition for the old castle in Bordeaux and he ended up settling in Clare Valley when he was looking for a place to start a winery.

The one reason that got Taylor family to stay in Clare Valley was its unique earth condition. Terra Rossa that refers to red colored soil is known to be ideal for red wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Hence Taylors are more invested in red wine than white wine.

We tasted several wines in the cellar door, and surprisingly their Riesling wine is as good as other wineries in Clare Valley. Especially their Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wine were very good. On the other hand, their Gewürztraminer or port wine were below average. For your information, Taylors also has won 5 stars from James Holliday. Also recently they had put their name proudly on the list of the top 5 best winery in the world chosen by WAWWJ.

Sevenhill Cellars
It is the oldest winery in Clare Valley. This place was also strongly recommended by Pykes Winery. To give away the ending, Sevenhil Winery is the place I will recommend above other winery in Clare Valley as it has many things to see and has delicious wine at cheap price. Sevenhill Cellars has a large beautiful garden where you can relax and enjoy wine.

Sevenhill Cellars has significant historical value as it was established to produce wine for service of Society of Jesus that had settled in Clare Valley in 1851. Their cellar door and other facilities are as old as its grape vines. You can see grape vines that are older than 100 years here and there in the vineyard. The cellar door is also well decorated and they have wine cave which is very rare in Australia. So the place has more to offer than meets the eye.

They produce vast range of wine and the quality of wine varies depending on the price however most of them are very good. Actually their premium wine is quite cheap for its quality.

Jim Barry Wines
Jim Barry is the man himself who has established Jim Barry Wines. He was legendary wine maker in Clare Valley and a well-respected figure in wine industry of Australia and the world. He graduated Rose worthy university the most prestigious wine brewery school in Australia and earned the certificate for the first time for Clare Valley and started making wine. Since his passing in 2002, his son is continuing producing great wine.

The wine is exported to Korea, but it isn’t winning much popularity other than from wine lovers in Korea. So I feel a bit disappointed for the wine.

You can taste any wine you can find in the Cellar door. Especially you mustn’t miss the opportunity to taste the Armagh Shiraz and The Florita Riesling the wines that brought such fame to Jim Barry.

 

남호주 리슬링 와인의 메카, 클레어 밸리 – 두 번째 이야기

테일러스
프랑스의 샤또 Chateau 즉, 고성 古城을 벤치마킹 했는데, 마치 레고 세트장 같은 어설픈 디자인이 아쉬웠던 곳. 심지어 셀러 도어에는 ‘Chateau’라 이름까지 붙어있다. 샤또라는 말이 붙으면(지금도 그렇지만) 수준 높은 와인으로 여기는 사람들을 현혹하는 느낌이랄까. 

본래 시드니에서 와인으로 사업을 벌이던 테일러 가문은 세계적으로 유명한 보르도 메독의 ‘샤또 무똥 로칠드 Chateau Mouton Rothschild’와 같은 수준 높은 와인을 자기 손으로 직접 만들어 보고 싶었다고 한다. 즉, 보르도의 고성과 샤또에 대한 로망이 있었던 것. 그리고 와이너리를 시작할 마땅한 땅을 찾다가 결국 클레어 밸리에 정착을 한 것이다.

테일러 가문이 클레어 밸리에 정착한 이유는 단 하나. 바로 이곳의 독특한 땅 때문이다. 테라 로사(Terra Rossa)라는 붉은색 토양이 그것인데, 테라 로사는 사실 까베르네 소비뇽 등의 레드 품종을 재배하기에 아주 안성맞춤이 토양으로 알려져 있다. 그래서 테일러스의 주력 와인들은 화이트보다는 레드.

셀러 도어에서 이것저것 시음을 해봤는데, 리슬링은 클레어 밸리의 다른 곳들만큼 퀄리티가 괜찮았고, 특히 까베르네 소비뇽과 쉬라즈 품종으로 만든 레드 와인들이 좋았다. 반면 게뷔르츠트라미너나 포트 와인은 별로. 참고로 테일러스도 제임스 할러데이 아저씨가 꼽은 5스타 와이너리다. 그리고 최근에는 ‘WAWWJ’라는 단체에서 뽑은 세계 TOP5 와이너리에 당당히 이름을 올리기도 했다.

세븐힐 셀라스
클레어 밸리에서 가장 오래된 와이너리. 이곳도 파이크스 와인즈의 직원이 강력추천해서 방문했던 곳이다. 결론부터 이야기하면, 세븐힐 와이너리는 클레어 밸리에서 단 한곳만 와이너리를 들른다면 다 제치고 이곳을 추천할 수 있을 만큼 볼 것도 많고 와인도 맛있고 거기다가 가격도 저렴한 곳이다. 세븐힐 셀라스는 특히 넓고 아름다운 정원이 있어서 와인도 즐기고 휴식을 취하기에 안성맞춤.

세븐힐 셀라스는 1851년 예수회가 이곳에 처음으로 정착해 미사주를 만들기 위해 포도밭을 가꾸고 와인을 만들었던 터가 현재까지 유지되고 있기 때문에 역사적으로 중요한 의미를 지니고 있다. 와이너리의 셀러 도어라든지 주변 시설들이 아주 오래됐고, 포도나무도 마찬가지. 셀러 도어 근처 포도밭 곳곳에서 100년 이상 나이를 먹은 고목들을 쉽게 볼 수 있다. 셀러 도어도 참 잘 꾸며놓았는데, 호주에서는 보기 힘든 오래된 지하 셀러도 구경할 수 있다. 이래저래 매력이 많은 곳이다.

만드는 와인이 굉장히 다양한데, 가격 차이마다 약간의 품질의 고저는 있지만, 대체적으로 훌륭하다. 심지어 아주 훌륭한 와인들도 가격이 퀄리티에 비해 저렴한 편이다. 

짐 배리 와인즈
짐 배리는 짐 배리 와인즈를 설립한 장본인인데, 클레어 밸리에서는 전설적인 와인메이커였고, 호주 전체, 그리고 세계 와인 업계에서도 존경을 받는 인물이다. 호주의 가장 저명한 와인 양조학 학교인 로즈워시(Roseworthy) 대학을 졸업해 클레어 밸리 최초로 자격증을 가지고 와인을 만들기 시작한 인물이다. 2002년 타계했는데, 그의 아들들이 지금도 여전히 훌륭한 와인을 만들고 있다.

국내에도 수입이 되는데, 사실상 와인 애호가들을 제외하고는 그렇게 많은 인기를 끌지는 못하고 있어서 개인적으로는 아쉬운 브랜드다.   

셀러 도어에서는 원하는 와인은 모두 테이스팅 할 수 있다. 특히 짐 배리에게 명성을 가져다준 아르마 쉬라즈(The Armagh Shiraz)와 플로리타 리슬링(The Florita Riesling)은 꼭 테이스팅해보길.
