Lee Ji Sun’s art life of research, ‘About the MOON’ 달에 관하여

The Earth is circling round the Sun emitting bright light in its place, the Moon revolves around the sun. Looking up the stars in the black sky, the other place where the dreaming man first went to and stepped on. With a number of large and small traces of unknown customers, the gray satellite is seen as a small round with a pale yellow light from the earth.

Uncountable numbers of years ago, since it has hit the earth and been attracted to its gravity, the moon became the satellite, which keeps its steady orbit cycle all the way up to now. This complex and simple relation of spherical rocks had created the closest family of the earth with the sun, and constant movements of these three members maintain the living for the active lives.

Like the imaginations from Korean old fairy tales, such as a place where the grain pounding rabbits live, or the light that a sister has become with her brother transformed into the sun, the moon appears to us with its unique softness and delicate coldness. Seen by a child going back home with the parents in a car, the moon always has been following his/her direction, and women in earlier times used to pray to the moon whose light reflects in the bowl of clean water. In the full moon night, a man with a secret went back into the forest to turn into a wolf, and the eclipse often rises people’s imagination about a great disaster or magic.

The moon, shining only when the darkness takes place, shows one same face to the earth because of the exquisite match of the revolution and rotation periods. In accordance with the movement of the moon, the world celebrates its birthday coming after the sun’s, when scattered family gets back together to share the New Year’s greetings. The day of the moon, Monday opens the week, giving advanced fatigue the day before to certain people, and offering a fresh start like in the morning to others.

Moon world is to me a resting place, but also an isolated moment, which finally allows me a veritable concentration, away from the world. On the other hand, this is a thing I want to be, existing here and there on the earth with the steady orbit even when veiled by stronger sunlight. The existence not always recognized, but indispensable. The person with the same face showing different silhouettes day by day and sending soft lights. The one maintaining the air, balancing the pulling power together with others. I would like to be the moon, sometimes forgotten, but always there when you look for once reminded.
