Lee Ji Sun’s art life of research, ‘About the Hand’ 손에 관하여

On the boundary between the ground and the sea, the gentle wave brushes the fingers. Chilly contact from the edge refreshes all the body and the soft water caresses the skin surrounded by relaxing sound of the landscape. Sailing in the air and touching different objects, hands with their continuous movement resemble to the owner’s face. Experiences leave their memories in the hands, tracing wrinkles one after another. And scars made from various situations remain and heal slowly by the time.
Hands follow the places where eyes once passed by. The world full of sublime colors seen by the eyes loses names of the light and wears those of the touch – mild or freezing, tender or rough. Hanging at the end of twin arms, fingers constitute their best working team in both sides and serve as the best tool, which discovers the world and sculpts the life of the owner. Transmitting messages and noting all kinds of information, hands sometimes relax in the cozy pockets or under the heating blanket, as exhausted vision likes to rest in closed eyes.
Singular finger prints that a baby is already born with, identify the person among millions of others, and differently sized and placed lines on the palm are read by someone who tells an undeniable story of the past and the future. Colorful decoration shines on certain people’s nails and others’ nails nearly hold the fingers, bitten for loneliness and anxiousness. The ring on a finger reminds a certain moment’s promise or decision, and the watch embracing the wrist points out the present in the temporal dizziness of the world.
Flowing like the water, organized fingers play a beautiful harmony on rigid piano keys, write a complex story on an empty sheet of paper, and make a delicious food on a cold plate. Managed by a finger, the digital world enrolls a virtual and imaginary world, wider than a real one, with progressing speed and simplicity. Inside, the handwritten letters or holding hands warm up the heart, sometimes lost and drought in the digital numeric society.
Hands give the first action to the mind which may touch the memories and put them on the empty paper. While repetitive movements that fill the blank with a number of dots, their tracks are left in the eyes and on the hands, then remain as new born memories. Though the black ink at the end of the nail can be washed out with clear water, scripted letters and drawn strokes stay in the same place, like the lines engraved on the palm, carrying their own life.
The working process of the artist is led by his/her hands in their permanent and repetitive movements. The creative hands put together the pieces of the past and give them a life of the present. Hands following the lines traced by themselves become the eyes of the mind which caress touchable scenes and moments of the life.
