People who are left behind at Sokcho sea

Every summer Sokcho’s beaches are filled with tourists who visit the place for its famous ocean view. However the wires that divides the north and the south sea border is part of its view. The sea was one of the few pathways to the south for many refugees and thought to be the only pathway back to their hometown after the Korean War.

There were more transportations that could sail back and forth so it used to be the safest way to travel between the North and the South Korea. Thus many people would unload their belongs here and wait for their boat to take them back home, but the boat never came back after the Korean War and its Armistice agreement.

The sea that allures people with green reflections and grey sparkles at times is ever so seductive but to those who have lost their way back home, the sea with unreachable horizon seems to be the path way for the lifetime pain of longing and the sharp wind that might be the long deep sighs of families they can never see again. 속초 바다에 남겨진 사람들

매년 여름 속초 해변은 동해 바다의 풍경을 보기 위한 수 많은 관광객들로 붐빈다. 하지만 곳곳에 보이는 철조망들은 여전히 마을과 바다의 일부를 경계 짓고 있다. 바다는 초기 실향민들이 전쟁을 피해 이동하는 통로였고, 고향으로 돌아갈 수 있는 통로이기도 했다.

바닷길로 운용 가능한 선박이 상당 수 있었기 때문에 바다를 통해 이동하는 것이 가장 좋은 방법이었다. 사람들은 고향으로 돌아가기 위해 잠시 이곳에 짐을 풀었는데 휴전 후 대부분 돌아가지 못하고 지금까지 남아있게 되었다.

때론 연두 빛, 때론 회색 빛으로 넘실거리는 속초의 바다는 너무나 아름답다. 하지만 남겨진 사람들에겐 아득히 멀게만 느껴지는 수평선 너머로 사무치는 그리움과 만나지 못할 가족들의 숨소리가 여전히 차가운 바닷바람으로 돌아온다. – 작가 신미정
