The origin of all the cool wines of South Australia, Yarra Valley – part

Yering Station

It is the very first winery to cultivate vineyards and brew wine in Victoria, which is why it is marked as the most important place in the whole of Australia. Most of the very early wineries in Victoria started in 1840 and Yering Station was also established in that year by Scottish brothers called Ryrie.

When they settled in Yarra Valley, they had planted just 2 types of vine then they kept the rest of the land as ranch. Despite having small portion of the land being vineyard, the popularity of their wine was quite surprising in the late 19^th century. Especially in the 1889, the only winery from southern hemisphere that had won Grand Prix at the World Exposition in Paris was Yering Station wine. Rathbone family now runs the winery and they had kept the quality of the wine to this day.

Yering station named their cellar door Matt’s Bar and it is one of my favorite wine cellar. Its walls and floors are open to children to draw however they want to and several paintings are also on display. It shows how the winery cares for families to come and enjoy the wine together on weekends.

Victoria, especially Yarra Valley with its cool climate, is perfect place for white wine grapes and Pinot Noir for red wine. Among many Pinot Noirs from Yarra Valley, Yering Station’s pinot is one of the best in Australia. Don’t forget to taste what they call M.V.R which is smooth flavor white wine blended with Moudvre, Viognier and Roussanne. Its neat taste is truly the finest. Another red wine that is also a blend of shiraz and Viognier the white wine can be another smart choice.

 

De Bortoli Wines

De Bortoli Wines was established by Giuseppina De Bortoli and Vittorio who immigrate from the North Italy in 1928. As the business continued through 3 generations, their son and to their grand children, the winery had become one of the pillars of South Australia wine.

De Bortoli not only manages 34 brands of wine but also produces beer, which means they brew more than 100 types of wine. There is one particular wine that brought huge success to the family, and that is a sweet white wine called Noble One

The wine is quite famous one and used to be imported to Korea (I am not sure if it is still imported). The wine was created by one of the family members Darren De Bortoli, and it has raked in 406 gold medals and 130 trophies from international wine competition.

Noble one was made with Semillon grapes that contain Botrytis fungus. The grapes have good balance of honey like sweet taste and acid. The place is perfect for you to taste not only Noble One but also other various wines and experience the excellent restaurant as well.

예링 스테이션 

빅토리아 주에서 처음으로 포도밭을 개간하고 와인을 만들었던 최초의 와이너리. 그만큼 이 지역과 호주 전체에서도 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 곳이다. 대부분의 초창기 호주 와이너리들이 1840년대에 시작했던 것처럼 예링 스테이션도 1840년대 스코틀랜드 출신의 라이리 Ryrie 형제에 의해서 기초가 닦였다.

이들은 야라 밸리에 정착했을 때 두 가지 포도 품종을 심고 나머지 대부분의 땅은 목장으로 사용했었다. 그만큼 와인의 비중이 크지는 않았는데, 그럼에도 불구하고 이들이 만들어내는 와인들은 19세기 후반에도 엄청난 인기를 누렸다. 특히 1889년 파리에서 열린 만국박람회에서 남반구 유일의 그랑 프리 Grand Prix를 획득한 와이너리가 바로 예링 스테이션이었다. 현재는 래스본 가문 Rathbone Family이 가족 경영으로 관리하면서 여전히 높은 품질의 와인을 만들고 있다.

예링 스테이션은 셀러 도어에 맷츠 바 Matt’s Bar라는 이름을 붙여놓았는데, 이제까지 본 중에 가장 마음에 드는 셀러 도어였다. 셀러 도어 곳곳에는 아이들이 자유롭게 바닥에 그림을 그리며 놀 수 있도록 했고, 벽에는 미술작품을 전시해 놓았다. 가족단위로 와서 주말에 와인을 즐기는 것을 좋아하는 이들을 위한 세심한 배려다.

빅토리아, 특히 야라 밸리는 기후가 서늘한 편이라서 화이트 품종과 레드 중에서도 삐노 누아 와인의 품질이 특히 좋다. 수많은 야라의 삐노 누아 중에서도 예링 스테이션은 호주 최고 중 하나라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 이외에도 MVR이라 불리는 와인을 한 번 테이스팅 해보자. 무르베드르 Mourvedre, 비오니에 Viognier, 루산느 Roussanne를 블렌딩 한 부드러운 화이트 와인으로 입 안에서 매끈한 질감이 일품이다. 그리고 레드 품종인 쉬라즈에 화이트 품종인 비오니에를 아주 살짝 블렌딩해서 조화를 더한 레드 와인도 괜찮고.

 

드 보르톨리 와인즈 

드 보르톨리는 북이탈리아에서 이곳으로 이주해 온 비또리오 Vittorio와 쥬세피나  드 보르톨리 Giuseppina De Bortoli에 의해서 1928년 세워졌다. 이후 이들 부부의 아들에 손자까지 3대에 걸쳐서 와인을 만들어오면서 남호주의 대표 와인으로 우뚝 서게 되었다.

드 보르톨리가 현재 생산하고 있는 와인의 브랜드만 해도 34개. 심지어 맥주도 생산한다. 와인 가짓수만 따져도 100개가 거뜬히 넘는다는 이야기. 이 많은 와인들 중에서 특별히 이들에게 성공을 가져다준 와인이 있는데, 바로 노블 원 Noble One이라 불리는 스위트 와인이다.

한국에도 수입이 됐었고 꽤 유명한 스위트 와인이었다. 이 노블 원이라는 스위트 와인은 가문의 일원이었던 대런 드 보르톨리 Darren de Bortoli에 의해서 만들어진 와인인데, 지금까지 세계의 여러 와인 대회에서 무려 130번의 트로피와 406개의 골드 메달을 획득했다.

노블 원은 ‘보트리티스 Botrytis’라는 곰팡이 균에 감염된 세미용 포도알만을 가지고 와인을 만든다. 입에서는 꿀처럼 달지만 산도 또한 지니고 있어서 밸런스가 아주 좋은 스위트 와인이다. 노블 원 말고도 엄청나게 다양한 와인들이 있고, 수준급의 레스토랑까지 있으니, 방문하기에 더할 나위가 없는 곳이다.
