Ultimately Shield Estate was developed with Ed’s passion for wine alone. The source of Shield Estate’s pride comes from the 165-year-old grape vine. 165 years old means they have one of the oldest grape vines in the world. The grape type is Shiraz and their Shiraz wine is called Moorooroo, which is famous not only in Australia but also worldwide.

D’Arenberg’s history is quite complicated: it was established by Francis d’Arenberg Osborn in 1943 and he named it after his mother. His father and he were already quite famous for running vineyards and selling grapes, and Francis (Frankie) started to be interested in making wine once the business was going well.

Their wine uses Barossa grapes and other McLaren grapes but its types are various. Not only do they have Shiraz, Australia’s prominent grape but they also blend with grapes I haven’t even heard of such as Temporanillo, Sangiovese, Aglianico and etc. I really liked the way they produce their wine purely out of their own passion for wine.

Hahndorf is the oldest German town in Australia, as it was the place where Lutherans had settled down after running away from religious persecution during Prussia in 1839. The heroic captain who had sacrificed everything to save them was called Hahn and “Dorf” means town in German thus the name Hahndorf.
