After spending 4 days in London shooting mostly backstage, I needed a change and I think Milan was the answer. The first day started of right away for us, after just arriving by train at the central station in Milan at 7:00am, we took a taxi to the hotel to pick up invitations to the first show. The shooting plan for Milan was Catwalk shooting for the first day and street fashion for the rest of the week. So, I could not miss the opening.

After dropping off the bags, we caught another taxi and off to the first venue for Chicca Lualdi SS15 Collection, before we knew it, we were at the location and the first thing you noticed was the pinkish-red carpet on the side of the street leading you to the venue. We got there early, about an hour before the start time but we were ushered in through the grand staircase leading to the second floor.

You could not miss the meticulous attention to detail made by the host. On the way up the stairs you pass by two ceremonial uniform guards on each end of the grand staircase covered with red carpet. Going up the staircase to the landing, you would notice stone railings leading to a statue of a kneeing woman. It was a very intimate venue.

At the top of the staircase, we walked into the main room with thirty-foot ceilings and we could see the models were already going through the walk through. The coordinators and the designer were making final decisions on the walk and how to pace the models. The seats numbers were also getting assigned at this point and the swags were being placed on each seat.

Almost like magic, the place was set. The guests were getting ushered to their seats and we have a catwalk show ready to start. The lights dimmed and the music started, the first model walked onto the catwalk through these grand elegant doors. It is a spring/summer collection, so the color was the opener, and the model was in a coat and bamboo purse on hand, going green and more eco friendly was the theme. All the pieces in the collections were really cohesive, fabric, shoes and accessories to match. Out came the Ipads and mobile phone from the guest at the show snapping away at the looks of the collection.

The collection featured geometric patterns and Paisley prints on cotton linen but my favorite were the mix of sheered and thick taffetas fabric sets. This collection should be hit for the designer, once the collection hit the store.

The show was over and off we went to the next show. Next was a presentation featuring Fatima Val. Fatima’s collection was particularly appealing to us due to her particularly peculiar formation as a designer. She studied fashion at St. Martin’s and began her career as a model and it’s perhaps this variety on experience that gives her the vantage point on the design world. She can see or better say foresee the potential and disadvantages of stylistic choices.

On spot was her collection marking a clear dichotomy as eternal as life itself. The contrasting almost polarizing tones were all too present throughout the collection. The eternal struggle between good and evil, between chaotic city life and peaceful relaxation, between sensible and protective were the dilemmas to ponder.

The hoodies sheltering the model’s face as protective as a second skin. Asymmetric cuts added the modernism and technological touch we embrace in the current times, in which we show so much and also so little at the same time. The contrast played out quite well, not as a divergent factor but as a complimentary effect.
