Photographer, write the world with light
The movie begins by explaining the origin of the photographer. ‘Photo’ means ‘light’ and ‘graph‘ means a portmanteau word of ‘write’ or ‘draw’. In other words, ”The photographer is the person who writes out or draws out the world with light and shadow.”

Salgado was from the countryside of Brazil. Salgado exiled to Paris away from Brazilian dictatorship’s oppression in his youth. After finishing his study, Salgado had a steady job as an economist in Paris. One day, his wife bought a camera. This marked a turning point in his life. He was happy when he was taking pictures. He decided the way to be a professional photographer to testify the world in a simple passion.

Testify the violence of the world
Salgado takes pictures Of Brazilian gold mine workers and the images of desperate refugees of war and hunger with the camera. Salgado’s pictures are beautiful plasticly even they show the devastating situation. American writer Susan Sontag said about the pictures in the press as follows ‘to consume gruesome suffering scene images from the Third World’s people with the Western voyeuristic vision’ In that context, some people criticize his photographs.

He concluded that salvation is impossible for human being after testifying miserableness as like Ethiopian refugee camp, Yugoslavia civil war and cruelty of ethnic massacre in Rwanda between humans witness. He finally decided not to take a picture as a photographer. With a torn soul, he can’t continue to let the camera take pictures anymore.

Send a Love Letter to the world
Salgado came back his home town in Brazil with weary and ravaged heart because of the human greed and cruelty. But his beautiful childhood’s forest land had disappeared. He found the wasteland. At the moment, his wife suggested plant trees in these plains. He began planting a tree with his wife and he planted 2.5 million trees. This is incredible numbers of trees. It was a miracle. In his homeland he experienced a spiritual healing again with this acting. Finally he started to have a passion for the photography.
