Cuba is a country in the Caribbean. The nation of Cuba comprises the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos. Havana is the capital of Cuba and its largest city. The second-largest city is Santiago de Cuba.

Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, and with over 11 million inhabitants, is the second-most populous after Hispaniola, albeit with a much lower population density for the region. It is a multiethnic country whose people, culture and customs derive from diverse origins, including the aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples. Cuba today is the only remaining Marxist-Leninist state to receive a “very high” human development ranking from the United Nations, and ranks well in measures of health and education.

In fact, tourism was initially restricted to enclave resorts where tourists would be segregated from Cuban society, referred to as “enclave tourism” and “tourism apartheid”. Contacts between foreign visitors and ordinary Cubans were de facto illegal between 1992 and 1997.

The rapid growth of tourism during the Special Period had widespread social and economic repercussions in Cuba, and led to speculation about the emergence of a two-tier economy. Cuba has tripled its market share of Caribbean tourism in the last decade; as a result of significant investment in tourism infrastructure, this growth rate is predicted to continue, the third-highest figure in the Caribbean.

쿠바는 카리브해의 카리브 제도에 있는 가장 큰 섬과 인근 섬들로 이루어진 아메리카 유일의 공산주의 국가로 수도는 아바나, 공용어는 에스파냐어이다. 체게바라로 대변되는 쿠바는 사실, 피델 카스트로가 집권한 이래 현재까지 공산주의 국가로서 미국의 경제 봉쇄로 경제의 어려움을 자립 경제 체제로 버티면서 미국과 대립하고 있었으나 2014년 12월 18일 국교정상화 선언을 했다. 특히 쿠바는 카리브해의 진주라고 불릴 만큼 아름답고 독특한 정취로 전 세계 모든 여행자들이 죽기 전에 꼭 방문하고 싶은 나라로 꼽힌다.

특히, 카리브해에 떠 있는 붉은 섬이라는 별명을 가진 쿠바는 스페인과 아프리카의 영향을 받은 독특한 문화와 천혜의 자연 환경이 절묘하게 어울린 나라다. 쿠바의 수도, 아바나의 독특하고 이국적인 풍광은 그야말로 압권이다. 방파제 위에서 다이빙을 즐기는 청년들이 가득한 말레콘과 과거 아바나를 지켰던 요새인 모로 성, 18세기 바로크 양식이 그대로 남아있는 아바나 대성당, 혁명 광장, 앙콘 비치 등 쿠바의 매력은 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 무궁무진하다.
