Unfinished progressive story, ‘Frances Ha’ 보통의 뉴욕에서 프란시스를 만나다

Frances(Greta Gerwig) is 27-years-old. She lives with her best friend Sophie in Brooklyn, New York. She wants to succeed as a dancer in New York but she is just an apprentice in small dance company. She breaks with her boyfriend, and her best friend roommate, Shopie declares that she will move out. Finally Frances leaves alone.

Young dream in the city
Frances’s friend Sophie says “In New York, only the rich can live as an artist”. Francis who wants to succeed as a dancer has no money and no talent. She has just a dream. Francis received a notice from the dance company she will not be on stage in the following Christmas performance. She has difficulties to pay even rent and she changes from friend apartment to other friend apartment.

She wants to live what she wants to do. But it is not easy. Frances has many difficulties to pant herself. In fact we find easily such kind figure in real life. When a person asked her what she does at dinner, she explains about her job “It’s really complicated to… because I don’t do really my job” This is a figure of a young artist who can’t pant herself.

When the dance company proposes to her an office work, she refuses because she insists on dancing, even though she needs the money. Francis in New York who does not give up her dream overlaps with a number of other Frances in other big cities.

Sensibility of nostalgia from the mono tone
The film director Noah Baumbach shows New York in black and white image in ‘Frances Ha’. New York in black-and-white screen in ‘Frances Ha’ seems to not be separated from the other large cities as like Paris. And black and white tone makes follow the narrative of the film by ‘temporality ‘than ‘spatiality’. In the film the audience can smell the scent of vague past.

Maybe it was to tell the nostalgia for a time yet unfinished in progress through ‘Frances Ha’? Eveything Frances tries goes wrong, finally she accepts office work in the dance company and she choreographies her work. And she has her proper apartment. When she puts your name tag on her apartment mailboxes, she folds the paper written her name Halladay because of size of the letters. She puts ‘Frances Ha ‘for her name

뉴욕의 부르클린에서 단짝 친구인 소피와 함께 살고 있는 27살 프란시스(그레타 거윅)는 무용수로 성공하는 꿈을 꾸지만 작은 무용단의 견습생일뿐이다. 관계가 소원해진 남자친구와는 헤어지고, 의지하던 단짝 친구인 룸메이트 소피가 이사를 한 뒤 혼자 남게 된다.

도시 속의 젊은 꿈
“뉴욕에서는 부자만이 예술가로 살 수 있어”라고 친구 소피는 말한다. 무용가로서 성공하고 싶은 프란시스는 돈도 재능도 없고 단지 꿈만 있을 뿐이다. 견습생으로 있는 무용단의 크리스마스 공연에서 제외되었다는 통보를 받은 프란시스는 심지어 방세를 내지 못해 친구들의 집을 전전한다. 하고 싶은 일을 하며 살고 싶지만 현실은 녹녹치 않다. 자리잡지 못하는 그녀의 모습은 아직 뚜렷한 것을 찾지 못하고 불안한 삶을 사는 보통 젊은이들의 모습 그대로이다.

초대받은 저녁식사 자리에서 그녀의 직업을 묻는 질문에 ‘설명하기 복잡한데… 진짜로 하고 있지 않기 때문에’라며 자신의 직업을 설명해야만 하는 그녀는 자리잡지 못한 젊은 예술가의 모습이다. 어느 날 무용단에서 그녀에게 무용수가 아닌 사무직을 제안했을 때, 돈이 필요한 궁색한 형편인데도 춤추는 일 아니면 하지 않겠다고 자존심을 세우며 거절하기도 한다. 여기서 꿈을 놓지 않는 뉴욕의 프란시스는 다른 대도시의 수 많은 프란시스들과 겹친다.

모노톤이 주는 노스탤지 감성
노아 바움백 감독은 영화 ‘프란시스 하’에서 뉴욕을 모노톤의 흑백영상으로 보여준다. ‘프란시스 하’의 흑백화면 속 뉴욕은 파리나 다른 대도시와 구분되지 않는 듯하다. 그리고 흑백톤은 ‘장소성’보다는 ‘시간성’으로 영화의 내러티브를 따라가게 한다. 영화에서 관객은 아련한 과거의 향기를 맡을 수 있다. 감독은 ‘프란시스 하’를 통해 아직은 진행 중이던 미완의 시기에 대한 향수를 전하려고 했던 것은 아닐까?

뭐하나 제대로 되는 일 없던 프란시스는 결국 무용단의 사무직 제안을 받아들이고 안무가로서 자신의 작품을 무대에 올린다. 그리고 그녀는 독립된 거처를 갖게 된다. 그녀가 아파트 우편함에 자신의 이름표를 넣으려고 할 때, 크게 쓰여진 글자 때문에 성 Halladay을 접어서 ’Frances Ha’로 이름표를 넣는다. 이 엔딩 장면은 그녀의 미완성 이야기가 계속 진행 중임을 암시한다.
