CultureM Magazine introduces a Korean artist Hong Il Hwa’s art piece, ‘ma chair’ which it is on display at International art community in Paris for ceremony 130th anniversary Korea-France resumed diplomatic relations. Unlike his colorful recent art piece, it embodies the theme of self-examination. CultureM Magazine releases it with Hong Il Hwa’s work note.

“In French, ‘ma chair’ means ‘my skin’. But my real intension with ‘ma chair’ focus on a word ‘cher’(same French different accents). Pronounce of ‘cher’ is almost same ‘cher’, but the meaning is totally different. Normally, we use the word ‘cher’ when we write a letter for greeting. And it means totally same a word ‘dear’ in English. In fact, I want to express ‘the scent of man’ or ‘the scent of flesh’ through my exploration of beauty. And, my pieces is a kind of expression for the regret what we forget the our real scent because the colorful appearance.

“Whenever I hold the exhibition, I heard often a same question about the hidden message in my pieces. Every time I heard the question, I habitually answered like that ‘The artificial dressing and awkwardness of our contemporaries seen by media’. Frankly, I got used to say like this, even I didn’t try for showing my hidden mind. I spent over 20 years as an artist, I’ve been living for 17 years in France for expressing ‘the research of woman’s beauty’ through various decoration and makeup.

“My recent pieces are the most colorful, vivid ever I pained as an artist. But my life isn’t like my pieces. I’d say the time of the most thoughtful in my life, if anything. It is true that I lose something important because too much decoration, makeup in my pieces. I just want to paint the flesh. Just our nature flesh with our ages which it is neither beautiful nor showing for boast. And I want to paint the flesh of middle age without decoration.” – by Hong Il Hwa.

현재 파리의 국제예술공동체에서 개최되고 있는 130주년 한-불 수교 기념 전시에 출품한 홍일화작가의 작품을 소개한다. 최근 홍일화 작가의 화려하고 강렬한 색감을 중심으로 한 작품이 아닌 스스로의 모습을 돌아보는 색다른 모습의 ‘ma chair’. 컬쳐엠매거진이 홍일화 작가의 노트를 함께 공개한다.

“프랑스어로 ‘ma chair’로 나의 피부를 뜻한다. 하지만 이 작품을 이 제목으로 표현하고자 했던 것은 같은 발음의 ‘cher’때문이다. 편지 인사말 및 여러 인사말 첫 문구로 자주 사용되며 ‘사랑하는, 친애하는, 경애하는’을 의미한다. 사실, 내가 미의 탐구를 통해 찾고자 하는 가장 큰 바램은 바로 인간의 냄새이자 살의 냄새이다. 점점 더 과잉으로 치닫는 화려한 겉치레로 우리의 본연의 냄새를 잊고 살아가는 것에 대한 아쉬움에 대한 표현이다.”

“전시회를 할 때마다 자주 듣는 질문이 그림들을 통해 무엇을 말하고 싶은지에 관한 질문이다. 나는 의례적으로 ‘미디어를 통해 비춰지는 현대인들의 인위적인 치장과 어색함’이란 문구를 다양하게 풀어 헤쳐가며 반복해 말하고 있다. 나 또한 이렇게 말하는 것에 익숙해져 있고 다른 관점에서 내 속내를 보여주기 위한 노력을 하지 못했다. 내가 그림을 본격적으로 그리기 시작한 것도 벌써 20 여 년, 프랑스에서의 외국생활에 관한 아이덴티티를 대변하기 위해 ‘여성의 미의 탐구생활’이란 주제로 계속 서로 다른 치장과 화장을 통해 작업한지도 17년째다.

“최근의 작품들이 그 동안 내가 그려왔던 어떤 작품들보다 화려한 치장과 장식을 하고 있다. 그렇다고 지금 내 생활이 가장 화려한 생활을 하고 있는 것은 아니다. 오히려 가장 생각이 많은 시기라고 보는 게 정확한 표현이다. 치장과 장식 속에 점점 더 살 냄새가 덮혀가고 있다는 표현이 옳을 것 같다. 그냥 살 만 그려보고 싶었다. 예쁘고 매끈하고 자랑하기 위해 다져진 살이 아닌 그냥 아무것도 없는 살. 때로는 무관심하게 방치해 놓은 시간이 묻어나는 중년의 살을 그려보고 싶었다.” – 홍일화

A Korean artist, Hong Il Hwa is a member of the Korean Modern Contemporary Printmakers Association, and a member of SONAMU artist association in Paris. He was attracted by public when he won the Chunghyun Mecenat young artist award in 2008.

홍일화 작가는 한국 현대판화가 협회 회원이자 재불 소나무 작가 협회 회원이다. 2008년에는 정헌메세나 재유럽 청년작가상을 수상 등 다양한 대회에서 예술성을 인정받았으며 현재 파리와 서울을 중심으로 작품 활동 중이다.
