개조개는 ‘조개의 여왕’이라는 별명에 걸맞게, 포구로부터 멀리 떨어져 있고, 수심이 깊은 곳에 뚝 떨어져 서식하고 있다. 수심 40m 까지의 모래나 자갈이 섞인 진흙 밑에서 서식하기 때문에 잠수장비를 착용하고, 노란으로 칠해진 잠수기를 통해 어획한다. 개조개는 잠수부가 목숨을 걸고 채취하는 조개이기 때문에 거제도에서도 아주 귀하고 고가의 식재료다.

Washington clam, which deserves its nickname “the queen of seashells” lives deep in the water far from ports. As Washington clams bury themselves under send and mud 40meters below water, divers have to put on their gears and collect the clams with a yellow diving apparatus.
