A Familiar Portrait

“We occasionally run into one of those pictures taken in front of someone’s misery. In front of a burning house, or accident, flood, other natural disaster and so on. However when this norm meets mass media, it can take the scale to a whole another level. It’s not like they would create a mock up to reenact the situation or shoot an advertisement of it but they find mission in having the power of delivering shocking images of tragedy under the name of “scandalous”. We live in a world that always wants more scandalous, more shocking images and stories that I am afraid to see the next most horrifying story.”

“Carol Peterson a psychologist and the lead researcher at Memorial University of Newfoundland said, “By 10, those memories are crystallized. Those are the memories we keep. It’s the memories from earliest childhood that we lose.” experts believe that in how experiences are encoded in children’s brains, which is greatly affected by the attention their parents pay to them. In this case, researchers concluded, the Western parents were more likely to savor and tell stories about moments when a child said something funny or did something unusual, underscoring their individuality, while Asian cultures value collective experiences.”

“Indeed, experts say that if parents want their children to remember particular events from their early lives, they should discuss them in as much detail as possible and help children see their significance. Children whose mothers reminisce elaborately with them, eliciting their views and relating them to new experiences, at ages 3, 4 and 5, tend to have earlier first memories as well as better coping skills and higher self-esteem than those who mothers don’t. “We create a sense of who we are through these memories,” says Dr. Robin Fivush.” By a Korean artist, Hong Il Hwa
